| Moving songs to external hard drive (Posted on 1/5/13 at 10:07 am)
I did this yesterday to "reclaim" 120 GB of hard drive space on my computer. I got a 1.5 TB Western Digital Passport external drive. It was easy enough to move the files and re-route Itunes, but I hear occasional skipping when playing songs off the drive. Seems this is not uncommon on the external drives. Anyone have experience with this? Should I get a higher quality external drive? Internet research gives no certain answers...

I've ran my music off an external drive for 8 years now. Never had skipping. Western Digital is among the highest quality you can get. I have a 500 GB passport that I've been using for 4 years with no problem. I run time machine back ups to a 1 TB passport and I have a 3 TB My Book Studio that I have all of my movies and TV shows on.

You think you have enough storage?

This should do the trick. It's because your drive is sleeping most likely. http://www.addictivetips.com/windows-tips/how-to-stop-your-external-hard-disk-from-going-into-sleep-mode/

I've never had any songs skip off of any other disk. This is strange.

The first thing I always do with any Ext HDD is format it Fat32 so it reads from the PS3, 360, Cell phone, Android Tablet, all my Windows machines and Mac.

Dumb question but what benefit does that have from your gaming devices

Weirdly enough, it hasn't done it since the first day. Out of the box rust??? I did read that some of these with defective disks can skip, but seems OK as of now.

Yep, a whole crapload of music (24,000+ songs), a few videos and podcasts, and maybe two movies.

I have about 700gb of music on my external running the old type USB to my 2006 iMac. I have never heard a skip and everything is 1411kbps. External digital to analog converter as well, so even another step in the chain.

Perhaps all of that music was being indexed, slowing and causing a skip due to ram levels in your computer

Once you reroute iTunes you still need to drag and drop the collection from its new location into iTunes library. You did that huh?

If it's a USB drive I would try using a different USB port on your computer. ETA - Also, it will most likely skip when your computer executes power options (puts video, internal HD to sleep, etc.). I have a laptop that does this. If that's what is causing it, turn the power options off or extend the times.
