Yeah, those bad boys bring home the bacon... ETA:
quote:
Bluefin tuna is prized for its tender red meat. The best slices of fatty bluefin — called "o-toro" here — can sell for 2,000 yen ($24) per piece at tony Tokyo sushi bars. "It's superb. I can do nothing but smile. I am very happy," said Kosuke Shimogawara, a 51-year-old customer, who pointed out that if sold at cost, each piece of sushi could cost as much as 8,000 yen ($96).
Some expensive fish right there

There is no way he is going to profit from the tuna by purchasing at that price. The inflated price is due to it being the first auction. Doesn't make sense to me.

He's not looking to really profit from the fish. He is just trying to give back to Japan after the Tsunami hit last year.

There's a great show on TLC about some guys from Mass. that fish for bluefins. Difficult fish to catch. They are normally bringing in about $12-$18 per pound according to that show, so a 600 lb tuna should "only" be worth about $10k.

The Japs are fishing the Blue Fins to extinction. Hopefully the guy who is trying to farm them will successfully hatch blue fins. He will be one rich fricker if he does!

That's ridiculous considering I wouldn't eat anything caught off the coast of Japan right now.

Happens every May for two weeks when they pass thru. The gulf is a breeding ground for them. Now the law states that if you know you hook up with a bluefin, you have to cut your line. One can not land a bluefin tuna in the Gulf of Mexico anymore. I saw a 1,000 lber landed out of Venice. Dam thing was over 13' long. That was about 10 years ago.
