| Watched my 8 year old nephew play youth league hoops tonight... (Posted on 1/4/13 at 9:09 pm)
His team stinks. You always hear its coaching, but I'm not sure. None of the kids has fundamentals as basic as dribbling and passing down pat. I digress. The opposing team is much more talented and much better in the fundamentals department. They're up multiple scores in the 2nd half, and off a made basket, they start a full court press. Mind you, my nephews team can barely bring the ball up the court via dribbling being defended by their imaginary friends or by air for that matter. It's obvious to everyone in the stands that they can't. They harass the inbounds and take it away and after they lose it out of bounds on their end, they line up to full court press my nephews team again. Was I wrong to loud cap this guy from the stands to shut down the press against 8 year olds? Am I now The Great Uncle Santini? BTW-He called the press off.

Same thing here, and my nephew's team got beaten 20-2 in their first game. It's obvious these kids are inexperienced and/or not coached properly. The kids actually hit a wild arse 3 pointer and a free throw to tie it in regulation before falling by two scores in OT. By far it was the most fun my nephew has had in the league so far. It's because the score was close and they had a chance. If this other team starts pressing, they'll get destroyed. I'm not advocating participation trophies, or not keeping score, either. I'm just saying let young kids develop an enjoyment and enthusiasm for the game. Beating a team 18-3 or something similar at that age just makes a kid check out or lose all interest, IMO.

Eight years old is when they should be learning fundamentals. Practices should be all about dribbling, passing, etc.

They will struggle to scratch one game into their win column. I'm not naive. I just want my nephew to love the game because I enjoyed it and played it. Purely selfish motivation. But if any kids gonna enjoy the game, they have to learn how to play it. Running full court press on 8-year-olds with limited skills isn't going to teach either team how to win. It will stroke wanna be Phil Jackson'w ego on the opponents sideline. Strictly my opinion but I think I'm in the right..but I did ask for opinions, so thanks for sharing, Brosephine.

If your nephews team was humiliating the other team and pressing them would you have called out his coach?

Were you the person that was throwing his hands in the air and yelling at the kids?

Frankly, it's disrespectful and wastes everyone's time to fake-play with an obviously inferior opponent. The game shouldn't have happened to start with and the coaches should have agreed to forfeit once the result was clear.

I'm not judging you. I know it is hard to see someone get dominated, especially if they are innocent. Just think that fans shouldn't try to do the coaches job, no matter the level. I blame the coach of the losing team somewhat. Maybe he could have called a timeout and asked the opposing coach to call off the dogs. Hell, could have wanted to reward his own players by letting them have fun with a full court press.

I can't relate. My son was leading scorer two weeks ago. Unfortunately, they lost 55-2.

My son played 8 yr. old basketball last year. Our city league only allowed them to defend inside the 3 pt. line.

It is coaching. I once witnessed a Division II college team lose every match in women's volleyball. They fired the coach. Due to scholarship limitations they didn't bring in any new players. The new coach came in and they won every match the next year. Her main focus was fundamentals. From zero wins to undefeated with the same players. Quite an eye-opener to see just what a good coach can do. I've seen a lot of bad coaches and really only a few really good ones - and that's in all sports.
