I was just thinking about how my pay has increased within the past 2 1/2 years. My wife and I are making making roughly 30k more a year, but I feel poorer. Granted I got married, bought a house, new car notes, picked up my wifes bills, etc. But it's a little depressing that even though you make more, you always have something new to pay for.

I may be spoiled, but I don't agree that $75,000 covers basic needs, savings, charitable spending, and discretionary spending. I guess it's all relative.

If you can't cover your basic needs, then yes, you are spoiled. People make due on a lot less.

In this country as long as you aren't in a major city 75k should be enough. For me I try and keep my reoccurring bills as low as possible and have lots of disposable cash.

I think that is the actual argument; price of living in your area. I live in the Augusta, Ga area where $75,000/yr goes a VERY long way.

whoever says money can't buy you happiness doesn't make enough. I'd be happy with 75k, but for a short period til I'll be hungry for that 100k a year. But right now with my shitty salary, I'd be very happy with 75k or 50 for that matter.

It may or may not buy happiness, but it sure makes paying the rent a whole lot easier. And that makes me happy

Basic needs, absolutely. But the article suggests that $75,000 comfortably covers basic needs, savings, charity, and discretionary. For me, it would not. Of course I am also thinking about this in terms of a family (wife and one young child) not an individual. If it was just me, then that number would probably be about right. My family income is a good bit more than that and we are nowhere close to living in the lap of luxury. We aren't worried about basic needs, but the other stuff (savings, charity, discretionary spending) I still feel like we are short on. ETA: I'm not saying we couldn't survive. Of course we could. But I wouldn't feel comfortable about my level of savings and certainly would be longing for a lot of pretty run of the mill "discretionary" things.

It doesn't "buy" happiness per se, but it can make life MUCH easier and less stressful, which in turn can make you happy. Someone who has a great family, friends, SO, and overall well being, but still has to stress about paying the bills can be sad on a regular basis, but if they had enough money to where they didn't have to worry about those things, they would in turn be happy. On the contrary, someone who had an endless supply of money and never had to worry about bills, but had no family, friends, SO, and was constantly ill, then money does not buy them happiness.
