re: Has ESPN Destroyed Sports?

I agree with the OP. Sports have become too commercialized.

no, they are not on equal footing.

NBC Sports and CBS Sports are both relatively new.

They have a 30 year head start on most sports specific channels.

Is ESPN supposed to give a frick that NBC and CBS want to get in the game? You don't broadcast sports 24/7 for 30 years if you're not excellent at it. Maybe NBC and CBS will have more even footing in 30 years.

quote:

I'm having trouble finding the link right now but one of the ACC head honchos came out and said ESPN told them to go after Syracuse and Pitt. This happened right around the time the Big East announced they were going to take their TV rights to open market. Connect the dots. He later backtracked but you dont get a thought in your head like that out of nowhere.

But you don't know that it happened. You'd like to think it did because you're biased.

I remember when ESPN bought the rights to the Jefferson Pilot / Lincoln Financial early SEC game and I was mad about it at first due to nostalgia. Then I watched it in beautiful HD and forgot why I was mad

yea, all that stuff with the Big East just happened out of nowhere. The ACC dude made it up in his mind that they were directed to go after Big East schools.

and no, I dont think ESPN should care what NBC and CBS do BUT I also think its pathetic they will purposely ignore a major sport simply b/c they don't air it.

Good luck getting Sportscenter highlights on NHL playoffs, results of a big boxing match, MLS results, or any other sport they don't air heavy amounts of. You are more likely to get force fed more Tebow garbage like this.

Here is a link for you from Business Insider.

LINK

ESPN basically works from the standpoint of a monopoly. I quit watching ESPN after that whole Texas Tech debacle.

Texas Tech is an excellent example of how their conflict of interests dictate how people understand a story.

They basically tried to ruin a guys career b/c James was mad his kid sucked and wasnt getting PT.

They ignore sports that the general population doesn't give a frick about. I have no qualms with this and I don't know why you would. NBC is covering the hell out of soccer and hockey and they are the best NFL broadcast out there. That's their niche. Maybe one day they'll cover more but every sport is covered extensively somewhere. ESPN doesn't have time to cover everything.

I'm pretty sure there was more to this story than a mad father and you know it. Leach shouldn't have locked that kid in that room. He got fired because he's bat shite cray cray. Not because of ESPN.

You obviously only got the story from ESPN since that piece of shite kid said he lied about the whole thing.

I read your link. Nothing but Big East butthurt here. If this happened, ESPN and ACC have been caught making good business decisions IMO.

Adam James had to admit in open court that he made all of it up.

Sport are more enjoyable when you stop watching ESPN. I just watch it for actual games for the most part. NFL network for NFL, MLB network for MLB, TNT for NBA, etc. ESPN is still the most influential sports entity but that is slowly changng with NBC sports and the other startups.

yes actually b/c they were only willing to push James side of the story since he was one of their employees. They never retracted shit, they never fired him for using the network to try to kill a career, they flat out didnt care.

They allowed James to run full steam ahead with his smear campaign, so, yes, ESPN is to blame.
