Not by my dad. He said if you cleaned it like you are supposed to clean every gun you depend on, it was plenty reliable.

Which wasnt exactly easy to do in the conditions they faced, and the weapon had issues with brass jamming in the chamber that had little to do with proper maintenance.

The early models were also not made with high quality parts, which, in the conditions they faced, would begin to rust no matter how diligent they were when cleaning their weapons. Just not a practical and well tested design for that conflict.

AK pros:
More powerful
Cheaper ammo
More reliable
AK cons:
ugly
less accurate (but still very accurate within 100yds)

AR pros:
Extremely customizable
More accurate
AR cons:
Ammo is 50-75% more expensive
More delicate than AKs

Even in basic where we cleaned our M16s nightly before turning them in to the armorer, once we got to the field or range (Ft. Dix = sand), you would get the Ol' "pop, pop, screech" about 30% of the time. My go to is an AK 74. Easy to shoot, never fails to fire and the 5.45x39 is plenty accurate. One thing I noticed is that the gas tube on an AK is so big that you could probably never clean it and never fail to get proper return pressure. In the end, it's all about what you're comfortable with. Both platforms have killed plenty.

With an AR you can get a .22 conversion for $200 (in normal times) and shoot cheap. I don't know if this is possible with the AK...

Where can I get one of these? And what manufacturer do you recommend?

Pre gun craze- 1000 rounds for $200 was extremely common. Now, 1000 rounds is fetching for $250-$300. It is still available on some sites and is popping up here and there in my email alerts.

The main reason AR15 models are selling like hotcakes right now is because it is the specific model that the media is targeting. The AWB includes both models, but the AR is the one being demonized in full force right now. The AK has been demonized since it was invented in 1947.

What's a fair price for a good AK in this market? My brother in law is trying to sell one on gunbroker right now.

I know nothing about AKs. At all.

Arsenal is the best manufacturer for AKs. They are also a lot pricier. Norinco Mak90s are solid. Another poster has a Saiga which is solid.

I have a Yugo Zustava PAP M70. Reviews are mixed. Many people run into feed issues, but if you use solely Yugo mags, you will not have any feed issues. The receiver is milled to fit a high capacity magazine. It is when people buy Chinese/polymer/german mags for the Yugo AK, then it starts to have feed issues.

The Ceiner is now the industry standard. Without a dedicated upper you will lose a little accuracy but it should run fine. I have no idea where any are instock...
