2030: The Real Story of What Happens to America

Anyone read this book? What would happen if something like this actually happened?

June 12, 2030 started out like any other day in memory—and by then, memories were long. Since cancer had been cured fifteen years before, America’s population was aging rapidly. That sounds like good news, but consider this: millions of baby boomers, with a big natural predator picked off, were sucking dry benefits and resources that were never meant to hold them into their eighties and beyond. Young people around the country simmered with resentment toward “the olds” and anger at the treadmill they could never get off of just to maintain their parents’ entitlement programs.

But on that June 12th, everything changed: a massive earthquake devastated Los Angeles, and the government, always teetering on the edge of bankruptcy, was unable to respond.

The fallout from the earthquake sets in motion a sweeping novel of ideas that pits national hope for the future against assurances from the past and is peopled by a memorable cast of refugees and billionaires, presidents and revolutionaries, all struggling to find their way. In 2030, the author’s all-too-believable imagining of where today’s challenges could lead us tomorrow makes gripping and thought-provoking reading.

I need to read this book. Sounds interesting.

Plus, it plays on my severe dislike of the baby boomers.

One thought I had about the book as described:
Should read " The Chinese government after calling in all the $28 trillion debt was unwilling to repond to any problems the American colony had. In a peaceful transition they ceded the former USA back to the, by now, 94% of the populace that paid no taxes."

Just another example of balkanizing the country. Sit on your arse in front of a computer and blame someone else for your miserable life.
I was born a couple years before the official Baby Boomer generation, but since I started my career late, eleven years after I graduated HS, I will give my two cents.. Real poverty was the reason.
When I graduated HS in 1960, the only student loan available was $200.00 if I could scrape up $200.00 to match it. My older sister and brother each gave me $100.00. I started, and earned my tuition and board by working in the university cafeteria. After a year I dropped out, joined the Navy, with the condition that my $200.00 student loan would be repaid out of my $78.00 a month salary. I spent seven years aboard a submarine during the cold war, as a deterrent to Soviet aggression. Those seven years qualified me for the GI Bill, which I took advantage of and earned my BS Degree.
Contrast that with the hardship of the present college age generation who believes life is being unfair to them.

And minimum wage was <$1.50. It's all relative.
