Most certainly not...rankings are extremely important late in the year and constitute "contending".

We fired Crowton, but we still can't develop a QB.
We fired Crowton, but we still can't crack top 50 in offense.
We fired Crowton, but we still have no passing game.
We fired Crowton, but we are still having execution problems and we are too predictable.

Why did we fire Crowton again?

Did we? Looks like he found another job to me.

Well, MSU was 7-0 at one point this year and they weren't contenders.

LSU is basically a contender by default on talent alone every year to start. I think Miles certainly deserves a lot of credit for maintaining that kind of program.

Party agrees we are elite.
Roger agrees we are in contention yearly.

Good enough for me.

Spread the word and maybe it will be contagious. Hahahaha

I'm presenting reality and not panicking like the OP and so many "fans".
I thought you were leaving...J/K.
I don't believe I am panicking. You choose to think LSU is an elite program. My definition of elite is different from yours. But I guess you're right.
Question: what would our season have looked like with a significant drop in defensive talent/experience but the same ineffective offense?
That's what is most likely to happen next year unless we have significant changes. Yes, that's an opinion, but I've thought about it for a while and am pretty sold on it.
You can disagree.

We could be where Alabama is today, going for 3 out of 4. That's the most infuriating part to me. Why some on here think Miles and the offensive decisions are above criticism is the eighth wonder of the world.
This is pretty much every "nega-tiger's" synopsis & it's logical, yet they get bashed for it.
I guess b/c of the method of some of their deliveries.

Contention based on talent level. There aren't 10 teams year in and year out with the talent LSU has.

In most years, there aren't more than 3-4 games that should even be competitive.

If you agreed with most you probably would argue with so many on here. (doesn't mean you're right or wrong, BTW)

By your definition, literally dozens of teams are in contention midway through the year & every team is in contention at the beginning of the year.
So yes, LSU is in contention every year.
You win.

Yeah, I couldn't stay away...hahahaha

Look, I get what you're saying, okay.
I just want a little more balance in the assessment.
Too many fans go overboard with just the negative and so much of the criticism centers around an anti-Miles agenda and isn't a fair assessment.

We have work to do, I freely acknowledge that.

There are 3 phases to football and we excel at two of them.
First year starter at QB, lots of players lost throughout the year, played a tremendous amount of youth...yeah, I'm disappointed in this season, but I understand most of what happened.
Keep in mind, every year brings us new hope that those collection of Saturdays (and one Friday) in the fall will lead to ANOTHER title.

LSU IS elite and will continue to be!

Talent is a HUGE advantage and I don't think we should take it for granted like the pantry just refills itself on its own.

Recruiting alone is worth a huge portion of a head coach's salary.

Also, LSU plays in the SEC.
For some reason "fans" like to think its a one game season now.

So, it's a one game season in the best conference in the world.

Not bad.

I agree, but expectations and standards are also raised as well. You can't separate what a coach makes from the present results.

Standards for coaches are are making elite money should be higher. A lot of guys really seem to get complacent after winning a title. It's hard work to stay at the top.

Right and that goes to my other point about dollars per win.

I know you read the Forbes article and I found it interesting, but even less complex than that, just look at what Miles is paid relative to similarly paid coaches.

Dollar for dollar we are winning against better competition at a reasonable market price.

don't remember calling you a name & if I did, I apologize

Bad writing on my part. what I was trying to say is that I think we could sit down and have a conversation about something we disagree on and would not end up calling each other names.

I apologize that my turn of the phrase made it look like I thought you had called me a name.

As far as I can tell, you haven't been doing that to anyone. My comment was meant as appreciative. Thanks for an adult discussion, a seemingly rare thing on TD.

OK, but the salary part is relative.
Go check out that thread about the lack of player development based on results vs recruiting.
My point is that this woeful offense is a trend not a 1-2 yr aberration. And whether the recruiting is overrated or the player development is terrible, someone is to blame (can't have it both ways).

Billy, we need a QB, man.

It all starts there.
I know, I know...coaches must develop the player.

I really think Mett will have a good year next year and that will get things flowing on offense.
1st year starters in the SEC tend to struggle.

Let's give it a little more time.

I've done my share of emotional/irrational posting.
I try hard to not take this too seriously. But then I feel apathetic & that becomes worrisome as a passionate fan.

Ditto to that! I try not to call idiots out as idiots, though, because I sometimes look back at my irrational posts and think "what an idiot".

Just a sign of depression, it'll pass when the tigers start playing better offense. Hopefully a new OC or at least some shifting of philosophy will occur. Maybe a more mobile (but a good pass first mobile, not a running QB) quarterback would help, too.

Good thread.

This seems to be a perpetual issue. I don't think it's the QB's.

I don't want to rehash the last 4-5 years.

You know the history as well as I do.

If we don't have offensive success over the next 4-5, I 'll join you.
