Football is a violent sport. A career-ending injury can happen at any time, even in practice. They choose to leave early to take big money while they can make big money. It's not a lack of commitment or a lack of caring about their schools... it's simply about getting the big bucks while you can.

$400,000 vs staying in college

What would you do?

They should be able to leave when their talent is being wasted.

I have no problem with a player leaving early as long as he or she has obtained a degree. If something goes wrong then player always has the foundation of an education to rely on. I think the NFL should take it into consideration to let guys get their education before allowing them to leave. Been a lot of guys leave early earn big money and either get hurt, flop out, or deal with an unforeseen circumstance to end up broke.

Wow. One of most naïve posts ever. LSU gave these players a chance? That is not a team of 85 walk -ons. They are highly targeted assets. They gave LSU a chance.

Juniors, and worse RS Sophomores (why, Brockers, why?) leaving for the NFL is by far my biggest sports-related pet peeve. It shows a lack of commitment on the part of the player as well as a lack of caring about the players on the part of the NFL. I really think it would address a lot of issues if the league made a 4-year college degree and SENIOR classification mandatory in order to be draft eligible.
You are fricking stupid.

Reid and Minter have their degrees already, FWIW.

You should read up on this before you post.

What about guys like Tyrone Protho who had NFL careers and now work at a bank on campus? That degree didn't help out too much. What if he would have left early or even had one or two years in the league, he could have had 10 years the Salary of working a 9-5 job.

I thought it was neat how Josh Reed made his NFL money (like 9 years in the league) and then retired and came back to get his degree.

You could kiss college football goodbye
They would just create a minor league for football to develop players
Total and utter nonsense. What do you suppose college football used to be? It was where future NFL players prepared for the pros. It wasn't always ok to jump ship early and declare for the NFL. That's a relatively recent development in the ongoing onslaught of Pro Sports, INC. Players, except for extreme hardship cases, were expected to finish out their college eligibility, then get drafted. Greed has trumped common sense once again.

The NFL was forced into allowing EE's by Herchel Walker and the USFL. Walker had already won a national championship and a Heisman at GA and was ready to move on and the USFL offered him money when the NFL wouldnt.

The NFL does not want to lose its "free" minor league feeder program, which what they view CFB as. They conspired with the NCAA to come up with the current compromise. A college basketball player only has to play ONE year in college to go pro. MLB funds its own minor league program and allows players to go straight out of HS, as does Track and Field, Hockey, Soccer and a few others.

So why should CFB players be held to a different standard? If they have enough talent to play pro football, what does being in college do for them. If that is their goal in life, then they should be able to pursue it as soon as possible.

the degree the players get in general studies honestly does nothing in the real world, also they are getting paid 200 bucks a month on their scholarship, let them do as they please and when their football career is over, it can be their decision whether to come back to school and finish in a degree program that will help them financally for the rest of their life or not

Always was. But that should be no surprise to any who choose to play the game. Goes with the territory. I agree with the OP, that going to the pros early is not a great innovation. I think the NFL shows its greedy side in not locking the doors to underclassmen, requiring them to at least complete their college eligibility first, before becoming pro players. I know that is not a totally popular position with a lot of people who are $$$$-firsters. But when people complain that college sports is starting to look more like a business and less like student athletes in competition, well... duh.
