sounds like you're calling the preferences of some apparently capable adults irrational. your preferences may in fact be better long-term, but not everyone cares about that quite so strongly.
I don't think its a preference thing, I think its that they can't link actions/consequence, .i.e. buying something today will result in a much higher price tomorrow. They are just being impulsive. I think that isn't rational activity.
I used to buy into this but I don't anymore. I think most people are fricking idiots, and don't look at short term vs long term. They just act impulsively.
