I have his motto at my desk: "Live like no one else so you can live like no one else." And I also like to eat rice and beans.

Good common sense advice. I'm glad I decided to listen.

He has very extreme beliefs regarding the role of debt, but considering how many Americans have extreme problems managing debt I think the more people that listen to him the better.

True, but he also dupes a healthy % of young people who would never live like the idiot callers 80k in credit card debt into not being more aggressive, especially when they are young. Know thy self really applies. FYI his ELP's are always more expensive in their area of service than other vendors, but his flock will use them regardless of that fact, and the service is at best equal, which is pretty ironic.

Glad he's off 99.7. He interferred with my Phil Valentine fix! He's a grand marketer with an extremely loyal following, expressing age-old statements to those who don't implement age-old statements. No hate here for him. He seems to offer advice to those who listen to him, but his economic philosophies only apply to a certain demographic. He's not for everyone, like any other radio personality.

Don't know why you aimed quote at me, I never said that. But in response to your quote, I would absolutely gain more from from millionaires calling in about what they did to become millionaires, as the formula for becoming poor is pretty tried and true.

Are you referring to his "rice and beans" method? If so, this is only for people who are in debt.

I think he's like a nutritionist who tells people to quit eating junk food, eat vegetables/lean protein/less fat. Of course most people would lose weight on that diet. The fact that I was raised in a frugal household makes me think most of his advice is obvious (don't buy stuff you can't afford, don't run up credit card debt). For me, a credit card is advantageous for reward points and tracking expenses (and I pay it off in full every month). For a lot of America (those in debt), he gives good advice.

Right, but vendors pay Ramsey to endorse their veggies. The same veggies can be purchased much cheaper from other vendors, but his followers spend more for his ELP'S veggies, cueing the irony. I deal with this more than anyone on this board, as well as other issues where his message is not right for particular individuals. But his clan is huge here in Nashville, and young people are easily manipulated, especially when he ties religion into his message, also big business here. No, I am not against religion in any way, shape, or form. Again, the poor bastards that call in and listeners that have tendencies like the callers should follow him note for note.

My favorite was when he was railing about specifically purchasing term life with the shortest possible term (10/15 years). The VERY next caller says he is terminal, his 15 year term has expired, was too expensive to renew, he was uninsurable elsewhere, and what should he do. Dave never addressed the hole in his logic or why it might be a better idea to pay a little more for that 30 year term. And that's the problem, it's not one size fits all. So I get frustrated as I listen. Overall though, Dave just gives common sense solid advice.

I know I'm bumping an old thread, but my wife and I just started Dave's Financial Peace University class and I was curious what the Money Board thought about his ideas. He's definitely hard core, but he usually goes into great detail about why he's so hard core on most things. His biggest point is so few people live on a true household budget. He doesn't say don't go out to eat (unless you're in massive debt), only do it within reason and in line with your budget. I would love to hear from someone who has worked through his plan and can say it doesn't work. Especially the first 3 steps - pay off all debt besides the house and have a 3-6 month emergency fund. Sure, everyone can build wealth in different ways and be comfortable with different degrees of risk. But the mass majority of people today would be ruined if they miss just one or two paychecks. I think his main goal is to show people how to be ok if that happens.

Not everyone has a phd in economics like the resident experts on this board. Dave is good advice for over 90 percent.
Most of us who worked in the financial industry recognize that Ramsey isn't bad. Not optimal, but not bad. Basically he follows a Keep it Simple Stupid philosophy that is effective and better than doing nothing. Although his stuff is very very basic if you're looking for a "quit fricking up badly" philosophy Ramsey's advice is solid, sort of like the advice of a good high school coach. The interesting thing is that unlike some other personal finance gurus he is aware and admits that his advice isn't perfect, but is simple and designed to just keep people from fricking up too much. There are lots of people who need this and he does a fine job of it for that audience.
