Next to impossible to find silver coins today. Bank employees are also coin collectors and several sell on ebay.
So true, when I was a kid, I could still get in my change, Liberty Walking Quarters or Half's, silver coins in general, but today you are almost hard pressed to find a wheat penny. Too many collectors, and let's face it, coins today (after 1964) became 'clad coinage' and will never achieve value of some earlier coins, except for maybe some proofs, and then gold coins.
Anyone starting Coin Collecting, I would recommend Jefferson Nickels- even the rarest date is available for a good price (1950D) & you even get to include the silver war nickels. Roosevelt dimes is an option too, which includes a lot of silver years, without any very rare dates that cost a mint (pun intended).
Personally, I collect all American coins- Large Cents, Half cents, etc., but Jeff. Nickels & Roos. dimes are the easiest to obtain complete sets without trying to break the bank. It's a fun hobby...
