| WTF - car sales tactic or honest mistake? (Posted on 12/31/12 at 12:34 pm)
Drove 1.5 hours to test drive a car. Loved it. Sat down to buy / negotiate, salesperson said they made a mistake and the asking price is $4k over what was quoted on phone. I walked out steaming! And without a car. Has this happened to anyone before?

yep.....had this happen to me before. Told him my car I was trading, what I wanted, and the exact payment I could afford. Drove over there and it was like we never had the conversation prior to. car salesmen I think are taught to "get them in the door no matter what" and then they figure you're not going to leave without a car once you're there.

I had a similar situation happen to me they told me they had the truck I wanted, for the price I wanted, then when I get to the dealership, it is not the truck I wanted, but the stripped down model they tried to say I lied to them, but I then found the e-mail exchange on my phone in which I had described the truck I wanted in detail, and they said they had the exact truck they never apologized

I'm not sure it falls under bait-and-switch. True bait-and-switch happens when customers are "baited" by merchants' advertising of products or services at a low price; then customers discover the advertised goods are oh-so-coincidentally not available. Other products are "switched" for them; however, these items are often costlier.

Problem is proof unless he recorded the phone conversation with a date and time stance. Otherwise, doesn't matter. I would post the name of the dealership and salesperson as well as any other info here though.

The best thing to do in the future is to get them to email you that quote before you show up. This makes it a legal offer and something the salesman can't squirm out of.

I got this from a Mits dealer in Alexandria. Drove to Shreveport. After an hour of BS by the dealer's salesperson, I was so tired of going around in circles that I slammed my fist down onto his desk and yelled out as loud as I could, "I will NEVER frickING BUY A CAR from you, EVER!!!" As I turned to walk away, I noticed that I had split the glass top on his desk in two. As I walked out the sales manager came running after me, and I just swung around, stuck my finger in his face and said, "Don't say a motherfricking word!!" and I walked away, thoroughly steamed.

Sales tactic. Always get it in writing. Email/fax before you ever walk out your door.

Guys, I was in car sales for years and would never do this. Are there dip shits in car sales...yep, but far and few between. People do make mistakes, especially when you work 60-70 hours a week. Most of the "typical" car salesman are honest family guys who love people. You have to love your job and people to tolerate stereotyping that's apparent in this post.

I've leased two Subarus from out-of-town dealers and both delivered exactly what they promised. They're a different kind of dealer if you can believe that. I had the lease manager at one dealer tell me that he relocated to Tennessee after Katrina and went to work for a dealership up there but left after two years because "they just weren't Subaru people."

Uh, not really. I have known plenty of car salesmen. They like money and the feeling of accomplishment they get from beating someone else's arse when they get them to take a deal that they know isn't good.
