| Guardiola would snub City in favour of United (Posted on 12/30/12 at 1:18 pm)
quote:
According to the Daily Star Sunday, Pep looks to be heading to Manchester in the future, but to replace Sir Alex Ferguson when he retires, not Mancini. Pep Guardiola may well have decided that the next stage of his career will be in Manchester. According to the Daily Star Sunday, the former Barcelona trainer would snub any offer from Manchester City in favour of taking charge of the Red Devils. Apparently Manchester City asked Guardiola to name his price for replacing the current coach, Roberto Mancini, and he also met with City's sporting director, Txiki Begiristain. But the former Barcelona trainer made it clear that he wanted the United job. Guardiola is hoping to replace Sir Alex Ferguson in the summer if he finally decides to retire. Should the Scottish trainer choose to continue, it is reported that Guardiola would extend his sabbatical for another season to wait for the position. Although Guardiola could double his money at City, he is interested in the Old Trafford project and has even met with Ferguson recently to discuss it. Both have property in New York and are reported to have met there at least three times. If the deal does finally go through for Pep to take charge of United, he would sign a three-year deal and request two assistants and three new trainers for the club's youth system.

Really interested to see how Pep will do outside of the Barca system/players... Hendo: How has Hyypia done at Bayer Leverkusen?

of all the major clubs, i have to say man u may be the worst spot for pep for a manager who relies on his midfield so much, what the frick is he going to do with that roster? it will take him 2-3 years to get a "pep" midfield, imho

We have good wingers and young attacking mids. He'd have to invest in some great holding mids. Young, Nani, Valencia, Carrick, Cleverley, Kagawa, Powell... (Rooney)

Leverkusen is a weird set up. He's co-manager or something with another guy because I think he was in the process of getting his license. Leverkusen has done pretty well so far, in second place. I think he'll end up being a pretty good manager.

you have kagawa and a bunch of fast guys who never developed valencia is basically just fast nani is a head case who doens't like to share the ball (but he could be technical enough to participate in the midfield) young is a traditional english winger. i doubt he'd fit if you're running a possession system with michael fricking carrick anywhere near the field, you're so fricked it's funny

Valencia is one of the best crossers of the ball but he was born without a left foot and is constantly injured. Kagawa would firebomb the EPL though

Do you have any idea what you're talking about? He's 3rd in the league in completed passes with an 89% pass accuracy. Cleverly can also be a fantastic possession based midfielder.

is he going to play the CB/CDM role? when i think of an engine like xavi, michael carrick isn't exactly the first name that pops in my head. i don't know if we can truly compare him to a biscuits, either

Well he will obviously pale in comparison when you compare him to the best holding mid and DLP on the planet. He is United's best option for the holding mid role though (even though he's on the wrong side of 30).

that's the type of talent you need to run that system, though

and that's why it would take years for them to build a midfield for that style. that's my whole point i suppose valencia could play a role similar to alves, but they just need like 4 impact midfielders kagawa can handle one of the AM roles, but they need probably 2 more (maybe rooney could do it). they also need a DM and a HM i just don't see how that would be an easy transition or how it wouldn't take a long time to fix. i know he won't pick his team based on current personnel, but city would be a much better option

No it isn't

Why would it take years? He could virtually have his pick of any midfielder in the world at United (Eriksen/Götze/Turan/Lamela). Also, Scholes-Carrick-Cleverly is a good possession-based midfielder with a good DLP (even at his age). They also have plenty of width, a top 5 pure scorer in the world, one of the most dynamic players you will find (Rooney) and a fantastic academy (something he won't have at City for a decade - a very important part of his success). You are assuming Pep would carry his exact system from Spain to England, which he probably wouldn't. It doesn't have to immediately be a pure possession system.

Yeah, we (LFC) went from lump it up to Andy, to a "similar" system in one season... It can be done... I agree he'd have to adapt at first and then see what happens, thats why I'm so intrigued to see him away from Barca...
