quote:
The answer's a simple one, Life, and choosing life, That honor might be reclaimed, That long and fruitful life, Might wash away the shame, For the man who dies needless, Who bears no sons, to pick, Up sword and plow and babe, What good serves him, His precious honor? What more can be wrought, With life? For no dead men, Ever built things great, Or small, or claimed revenge. No, the dying gasp for life, And with life to win chance anew. So the dead can keep their honor, While the living weep, and do, The things in death they left undone.
You didn't credit anyone; did you just write that off the cuff?

That poem is impressive. I'm not familiar; who is the author.
If I were to give you other men's words, I'd damn well give them the honor for it.

Google is the bane of plagiarists. Search, and see what you find.

Depends on what you mean by shame. Not worth dying for others silly notions of what's worthy of dying for, your country in all these recent stupid wars is a big example.

Depends on the sacrifice. I'd take living in shame 99% of time, though. I'm fairly sure I've done some things I should be more ashamed of than I am.

It would depend on the situation. One like the Titanic, I would hope that I had the fortitude to give my spot to a child and/or mother, rather than watch and listen to them die because I was a coward.

You know, it is an interesting dilemma. Let's say you are the last surviving son of an important family, the heir to an empire. "common" men and women are dying all around you, so what's a few more potatoes in the stew? You would provide work and jobs and industry, and continue on a legacy. What do you do?

I hope, what I believe is right, and save as many as I could with no thought to myself. Empires come and go and no one person is greater than any other, in regards to importance of life, imo. In the end, I'm sure there would be fear. Doing what is right and just in the face of fear, is what I hope I would have the courage to do. Having said that, every instance is different. If you had women and children vs say.. a murder convict, I'm sure my thought process and sacrifice would be different, although, it probably shouldn't be.

Do you really believe that though? I think we try to tell ourselves that because that's the way we've been programmed to think. But deep in our heart of hearts, our family dog probably holds more value than some crackhead thug.

I sorta answered that at the end, when it gets down to it, I think everyone values some lives more than others, such as a child or woman, vs a convicted murderer. I think it basically boils down to the situation at hand though. Kinda like a story that happened last year, when a man drowned, saving a child in a rip current. Some things, you just react to, with no thought of the risk to yourself.. or hopefully do in certain situations.

From a purely darwinian standpoint, all that really matters is the continuance of our bloodline. Part of why eventhe families and communities of murderers and ne'er-do-wells are still more likely to fight for their "own" no matter how horrid their crimes. It's all tribal

In that case, I have a legit excuse to be selfish . I'm the last male namesake of my family so if I die, so too does my family name.

I know for sure that I'd die for my son. I am certain of nothing else. ETA: Shame is survivable.

Live with shame, better than being nothing. Pretty easy choice.
