Do you still believe in true love?

I used too love every girl I ever dated so bad it would hurt. When they would eventually dump I would cry and moan about it. Then I meet my wife and it was totally different. No fire works and drama, some heated arguments and battle of the wills occassionally. I guess it is true love, we've been married 14 yrs w/ 4 kids. Anybody ever been in a relationship they would describe as true love?

Yeah, for sure, man. My wife and I definitely love each other and only have minor fights. <3

That's what's got me worried. I really don't want it to end but you never know or do you? In my job I deal w/ many old couples, most I would are not in love but very well suited for each other. True love has to be more than that.

What do you mean by "true love"?

As in, loving a person unconditionally, despite their imperfections? Yes, but i would say that it's rare to find a person who fits you perfectly and loves you for who you are. You have to find that balance

You know how you keep it from ending?
Decide together that each of you loves the other more than you love yourself.
If you love her more than you love yourself then there's nothing that can't be forgiven and worked through and learned from.

I always hated the guys that liked me and I knew that replace me with anyone else and they'd be the same way. One guy just couldn't figure out why I wouldn't date him. Uhhh maybe because every decent girl that shows you attention you're immediately in love with.

True love is real for starters, and I would say it last forever. I just think it is odd that I felt more in relationships that did last and feel nothing crazy stupid about a woman who has given me 4 wonderful children.

True love?

The only "true" love I think there is that of a parent for their child. And even then I'd say mothers are more likely to have that than fathers are, sad to say.

But the "one true love" you seem to be speaking about? It's a lie we tell ourselves so we can believe, so we can sleep at night.

The initial rush of dopamine and oxytocins that get us high on that feeling of "love", that's what we crave. What feels so good must be true.

But those things fade with the pressures of life and reality and time. And when they fade...well, you'd better hope there are more than good memories and "feelings" to hold you together.

It takes work. Love is a decision, not a feeling.

Even though I know you're bitter and I take everything you say now with a grain of salt, that last sentence is rock solid truth.

Had the same problem w/ earlier relationships, I would treat them good and they would dump me. Eventually learned to play my cards right. Hot passionate love doesn't last IMO. Like was stated earlier, balance is the key.

For sure.

And that's not to say you shouldn't passionately love them. I love the hell out of my SO. But the type where you love the person yet y'all constantly fight.. Dangerous. Same for the type that many guys fall into.. Loving a girl more than she loves you. That shite pushes girls away

That's because the initial "love" stages are simply juvenile, "puppy love." Adult love doesn't depend on heart flutters and what not. It's a lot more complex and deep. That's the kind of love that lasts.

My experience tells me no, but I want to believe. It takes a lot of work.

Does it count as true love when violins play and Angels sigh when she enters the room. My wife (may her name be praised forever) is the one around whom such things happen.

You need to experience it to understand.

Does it last?
Over 40 years so far.

I agree but still think it is odd not to have some correlation w/ my emotions. Most folks think nothing of watching a 3hr movie but can't stand a sermon over 30 minutes. We show real emotions at football games but show nothing at funerals. I think it is odd that we convince ourselves that what is real is something you can't feel.

re: Do you still believe in true love?
Nope.

If one relationship ends, you can always find a replacement. Maybe not as good. Maybe better. There is no one true love for each person. That's a stupid fantasy concocted by romantics.
