I would like to think if forced with this choice during say a war or something that I would fight to death and not run and hide. I always liked the saying, "I'd rather stand and die then live a life on my knees."

It's the same as saying "fight like a man and put down your gun" in place of a fist fight where you could die when you have a gun and the other person doesn't.

On what level? Do you think they would have been so "honorable" if they had grown up in the same circumstances? Did they not rape, kill, steal, and lie like men do today? I think they may have just kept their secrets better, and history has a way of forgetting some things.

And accomplish what? A grieving widow and a pine box so that some politician and his cronies can line their pockets and put a feather in their caps? Better to live, and come back to kill more of the enemy.

They really did keep their secrets better. If people had an alcoholic in the family, they kept that private. Today, they would get a reality show out of it.

I think everyone wants to think they would do the "right thing" but I doubt many would willingly die for honor.

Every man has to die eventually. It's the one absolute in life. I think Tecumseh said something like its best to not be one of those men who begs for an extra day or wishing for more time but instead to be one who greets death with a calm and content heart. I'll take honor and be remembered for that.

So, what's your answer to the question?
The answer's a simple one, Life, and choosing life, That honor might be reclaimed, That long and fruitful life, Might wash away the shame, For the man who dies needless, Who bears no sons, to pick, Up sword and plow and babe, What good serves him, His precious honor? What more can be wrought, With life? For no dead men, Ever built things great, Or small, or claimed revenge. No, the dying gasp for life, And with life to win chance anew. So the dead can keep their honor, While the living weep, and do, The things in death they left undone.

Shit, that's nothing. Go read up on The Unsinkable Molly Brown. fricking cunt survived by beating people off of her lifeboat with an oar. If some fat bitch did that to me, I'd find a way to get into the boat and strangle her.

Definitely agree with this. But what if another 30 years is at stake and you have kids and stuff. I'm just saying it's better to run Forrest run in most situations verus being "honorable in death." FWIW I would have gone down with the ship not because I said it was unsinkable but because I knew there was not enough life boats on board for everybody. I guess it's all kind of situational. Anyways, whatever anybody says they would do may not be what they would actually do when the chips are down.

Now, if death is certain, and much will be won with the sacrifice of the brave few, then I say greet death with a song and a smile, and make the enemy pay tenfold for each drop of precious blood that is spilt there that day. If there is no retreat, or if the escape must be won by the one that stands and fights, then let his glory be proclaimed from every rooftop, and his sons honored at the high tables. For there is glory to be had in death, but only when the reward is high enough to demand that ultimate price. Let not honor be the raiment they go into the dark for, but that the blood of their brothers might still flow.

Die with honor. Not sure how getting on a life boat is living with shame though. He didn't steer the ship into an iceberg.

I don't think it would be considered dying with honor in this instance if the designer would have drowned

That poem is impressive. I'm not familiar; who is the author.
