| One fifth of the U.N. budget comes from... (Posted on 12/28/12 at 11:41 am)
You So, why can't the two parties agree to cut some of that spending?

We should get 22% of the power then.

22% of nothing is still nothing.

Liberal Logic: Throwing money at the U.N. helps keep third world countries from bothering us. Can you imagine how bad it would be if we cut off their funding?!

Every member of the UN should have to pay the same amount.

Pretty sure China gives us plenty of "foreign aid".

Foreign aid is used as leverage for negotiation with some countries. You can cut it but that involves a much more in depth discussion on foreign policy.

Yeah, but think of all the benefits we get for that 1.2 billion dollars

I am 100% for defunding the UN and sending them packing out of New York. They can set up shop somewhere in Europe if they like.

Nope. Foreign aid is free help/money. China loans us money on interest. Not the same thing

The countries really getting screwed are Japan and Germany - as both are in the top 3 payers, while not having SC veto power. Conversely, Russia, which pays only about one-quarter of what Japan does, DOES have SC veto power while five countries that do not have SC veto power are paying more than them. "According to the resolution adopted on Monday, the biggest contributors after the U.S. for the 2013-2015 period are Japan (10.83 percent), Germany (7.14 percent), France (5.59 percent), Britain (5.18 percent) and China (5.15 percent). The next tier includes Italy (4.45 percent), Canada (2.98 percent), Spain (2.97 percent), Brazil (2.93 percent), Russia (2.44 percent) and Australia (2.07 percent)." Being one of the five permanent members of the Security Council and having veto power should bring with it the five top "dues" assessments and said "dues" should be equal among those five nations, with the US, China, Russia, France and the UK all paying the same.

Sometimes, I think the posters on this board would be quite at home living in some hovel in Afghanistan. You could settle any arguments with scripture, sport your AK-74 around town, eschew modern financial systems, have fourteen children since you have thrown away your birth control, and then you could attack international organizations that try to help your dumb asses vaccinate your children. The UN is obviously not a perfect organization and I could give countless examples, some personal of its ineptitude. The 22% is based on percentage of US GDP in relation to the World Economy in the year 2000, it is still around the same, some estimates being higher. An effective UN is in America's interest. It has been critical in peace keeping efforts and post conflict resolution throughout its history, the IAEA has generally been a success, land mine clearing is surely one of its more noble achievements, it has been influential in economic and social development, human rights, the environment, international law, and health. I could write a tome on how the UN needs reform, but all this anti UN bull shite is ignorant.

No, it is obviously a screwed up organization, and don't even know why it exists, and even more, why the U.S. supports it...no better than the League of Nations...

I don't care what it's based on. It's too much money to subsidize a 3rd world debating society.

The first 3 words in that sentence make the rest of the sentence meaningless.

Yes, there technique of keeping the peace by raping the local women is well known.
quote:
land mine clearing is surely one of its more noble achievements
So, if there were 1,000 land mines in the US we would call the UN to get them out?
quote:
it has been influential in economic and social development, human rights, the environment, international law, and health.
Translation: They take money from the US, Europe and Japan and give it to 3rd world dictators.

Most of the money goes to peacekeeping/security operations, not the "debating society"

Red Herring, much.

If we were a poor country, with out the means, I would have no problem accepting international help in these efforts.

Unfortunately in some cases yes, but in many more cases aid has gone to NGOs, nations allied to the US, democratic developing nations, and directly to people in need of aid.
