Calling Ducks

How good are y'all?

I notice a lot of guys I hunt with get really raspy and drawn out towards the end of a greeting or hail call. Can't seem to make this sound. That or a really choppy, clean feeding call.

Is duck calling that can be marginally done and still have good success? I honestly have not duck hunted enough in my life to know. I know goose calling is almost all about calling.

I know how to call. My brain and the noise coming out the end of the call don't match up though

It's way easier to get the 1st shot if your buddy is busy blowing the call

Definitely. You think ducks flying hear EVERY little note?

I've always said most people THINK they're calling ducks when, in fact, the ducks are coming and they just have to NOT call them away.

If you hunt in a rice field, for example, and the ducks like your spot, you don't have to call at all.

If you hunt in a hunting club with a lot of blinds in a lake then it could make a difference.

My biggest duck hunting pet peve is somebody blowing a call at ducks that are already coming in

I used to be mediocre, but this year I think I've gotten really good at it. Too bad there aren't many ducks to test it on this year.

That drives me nuts. Like doing a comeback call before the ducks even pass over the decoys! Idiots!

I can call pretty good. Like others have said though, duck calling is as much as about when NOT to call as about how to call when you do call.

If I think about the biggest wads of ducks I've gotten into over the last 25 years, there are as many times that I never blew a call as there are times that I blew a call.

Comeback calling when they are already toting luggage. Makes me want to shoot them instead of the ducks.

I'm very much a minimalist when it comes to calling. I only call at em when they are going away from me other than a few little hits if they won't commit.

I'm just getting to where I can speak the language. I only do it when they're flying away or have their backs turned to me when they start working. I like the feeding chuckle more than screaming at em

My pet peeve is guys that call frigging nonstop. One of the guys I hunt with starts as soon as we start hunting and doesn't quit til we tell him to shut up. Even saw one of the other guys hide his lanyard on one trip. Another trip his dad confiscated his calls from him

Put more sweet potatoes. It'll cut back on your need to call.
