Are you asking me to name some players who were drafted high and went to college? Just off the top of my head Whitson @ Florida and Cole who was at UCLA. Whitson looks like he may have made a mistake. He was drafted in the top 10 and went to school. He is now a junior and I haven't seen him on one preseason AA list. Purke - TCU - he also bypassed MLB after being drafted in rd 1.

in defense of him, he has gotten some kids that because of their commitments to LSU, dropped in the draft. Mahtook, Jared Mithcell, DJ Lemahieu, & Ranaudo come to mind off the top of my head. Exactly
...this still doesnt explain why he hasn't gotten a Top 5 rounder to come/stay here while other schools occasionally can. What was listed above happens at any good baseball school an strong commitments.

Also... Mark Appel (Stanford) - 1st round [last year in college] Ryne Stanek (Arkansas) - 3rd round [h/s] Scott Frazier (Pepperdine) - 5th round [h/s]

I was just naming some high schoolers who bypassed in first rd. I knew about Appel as well though.

Florida seems to do this once a year or so.... I do agree with what your saying, but I do realize sign ability has a major part in this. Bregman was a top 5 rd talent, but didn't get drafted until the 20's.

This still happens at other schools with strong commitments, it's not unique to LSU.

Perhaps we have just had bad luck and in the past these teams would throw the kitchen sink at these players. Hopefully with the new rules in place, it will change some of that. A player in the 5th rd won't be getting a $5 mil bonus.

first rounders who went to college... ain't too common......I could only dig up 4-5 in the past 10 years overall.

Gausman was considered a first round, top 20 type pick at this point prior to his senior season. He dropped slightly to a projected 2nd-3rd round type, but signability pushed him to the 6th.

Javi is great but let's not get carried away. The kid is already a great hitter.

I don't think you got the point of why he posted that.

It's happened 3 times in the past 3 years... Since the 08' draft 6 players drafted in the 1st rd have opted for college over pro ball. So yes it happens more than 4-5 times in the past 10 years.

It's very uncommon...and not an indicator of anything IMO. In fact, it may be more of an indication that teams get a real good feel for the signability of LSU prospects over other prospects. Or, it may be a reflection of Mainieri's approach to choosing the kids he chases. He works to understand what a kid wants from a signing bonus perspective and focuses on kids that he thinks have a higher probability of choosing college. In short, I don't think it reflects poorly on Mainieri at all.

It seems like they have a good read...the LSU recruits that are drafted high usually sign.

Texas lost Bell after he sent a letter to the MLB scouting bureau that basically said "don't even draft me, I'm going to school". And San Diego ended up with a pitcher that was taken in the first round. Each kid is different. I think players taken in the first round usually have a pretty strong interest in signing, and if they end up in school it is usually due to a breakdown in negotiations or an issue with the organization that picked them. Guys with strong commitments and/or high dollar demands usually drop lower than they should. And I mean "real" strong commitments, not just the ones that say all the right things about college for leverage purposes.

if the talent is equal, i dont see why it matters. you dont think other top programs lose players drafted very early? Ive been critical of PM in the past, but that is pretty ticky tacky. And i dont think other schools talk players into coming to college once the draft happens. Money dictates that decision, NOT that head coach.

Mainieri asks these kids to set the bar. Teams are crystal clear as to what it will take to sign.

Did I say that? No, I just said some other programs have had SOME success in having players drafted in the Top 5 rounds come to school or stay in school.
