various scouting report comments- Hunt’s combination of size, strength, and athleticism will pique the interest of coaches looking for projects with high ceilings. Plays like a first-rounder at times, but his production has never matched his physical tools. Style of play and physical tools recall 2007 first-round pick Adam Carriker. A multi-sport athlete who stands at a stunning 6?7, 290 pounds. Margus Hunt is a very hardworking prospect who has a fantastic motor. He has an intimidation factor with his size and is extremely powerful at the line. Hunt is a versatile prospect who should have no problem playing in either a 3-4 or a 4-3 defense. Playing out in the WAC you have to have some skepticism about some of the competition he faced. The senior started out poorly in 2012 with a bad game against Baylor. He played better since then including quality showings against Texas A&M, Houston, Southern Miss and TCU. Hunt has 28 tackles, six sacks, an interception, two passes batted and three blocked kicks in 2012. His technique in run defense and executing pass-rushing moves has really improved, but he is still extremely raw. Hunt had one sack in his last five games. Hunt may be best as a five-technique defensive end in a 3-4 defense for the NFL. On the field, however, Hunt’s performance doesn’t match the lofty expectations his measurables invoke. His best quality is his length, which he uses well. On Special Teams, Hunt has managed an outstanding 10 blocked Field Goals or Punts during his short time at SMU. He uses his length well on Special Teams, but he doesn’t use it nearly as well as he can when he’s in on the Defensive Line. Hunt managed to record just three sacks despite measurables that shouldn’t be blockable, especially in Conference USA. When in an obvious passing situation, Hunt is a good pass rusher. When he’s unleashed on 3rd downs, he can use his long arms and his strength to maneuver his way to the Quarterback. However, he doesn’t recognize offensive schemes well at this point, so that means in short yardage situations, or early down throws, he’s not so effective rushing the passer. Against the run, he’s bad. He’s pushed back a lot because lineman are able to get underneath him. He struggles finding the ball on play-fakes as well. Another very important factor in his potential draft stock is the fact that he will be 26 before he ever plays a down in the NFL. There have been a couple of first round prospects at or above that age in recent memory, but those players were polished products. Hunt is still very much a project. --------------------- where he is listed on some DE prospects ratings- 8 Scott Wright 10 Walter Football 9 Great Blue North 7 Draft Daddy looks far too raw for 1st Rd, will dazzle at the combine but not much experience or great tape. More like Michael Johnson Cincy that I've been pimping as a UDFA. Same in that Johnson had recognized 1st Rd quality tools but the rawness/inexperience dropped him to the 3rd. It has taken him three years for the talent to kick in as a productive player. In fact an even better example might be our own DT Hicks- extremely high ceiling but so raw it will take some time to develop. The larger factor with Hunt as a project is age. As mentioned, he might be 29-30 before you start getting the real return on investment.

I say if for some reason, he hasn't been picked up by the third round, go for him. Hicks was a project, too, and look how well he turned out so far.

very big diff is age though, a project type player at age 26 (Hunt) is a different proposition than 23 (Hicks). If it takes 2-3 years to become a fulltime impact player he would be heading for over-the-hill skills age versus kicking into his prime.

We should end up with a pretty decent pick this year. I wouldn't mind a little bit of a project, but not a 27 year old. HOWEVER, I wouldn't be upset if we take him if he can rush the passer. We have Smith who can be a first down DE if this is the type of guy who can come in on 2nd/3rd and long and get pressure on the QB. Or occasionally let him blitz from an OLBer spot. His numbers remind me of JPP in New York. Coming out of USF, he was 6'6" 260 lbs, ran a 4.71, played only one year of FBS football and was projected as a 4-3 DE or 3-4 OLB. His only year at USF he started 7 of 13 games and had 1 interception, 6.5 sacks and 45 tackles. Lot of similarities there.

We have Smith
His cap hit is $14.5 million next year He'll cost $5.5mil of cap just to get rid of. That will leave $9mil of cap savings by letting him go. I prefer the thought of him leaving. Having him around even at vet minimum and sucking another $6+mil is even worse.. This guy looks to have some amazing potential. He looks more like Hicks-Graham though than a 1st Rd NFL ready player. THIS is the year, picking mid 1st Rd, to get a guy that comes in with impact as a starter day one- not a project IMO. I'm in the trust this front office whatever moves they make camp tho (if they would). The batting average drafting and with free agents has been integral to this becoming the golden age of Saints football.

I agree, but wouldn't this guy make an impact? He may not be an every down player, but we didn't need that this past week. We needed a guy to come in at the end of the game and rush Tony Romo while we were up by 14 points. Think of having Gallette, Jordan, Hicks and this guy in at the same time. That should make at least a decent pass rush.

I say take him. He's special. As for the age, I would take 25 with little mileage over 22 with an acl history or something like that.

I want a replacement for Smith- as good or better than he has been. He was a #18 overall pick, came in and has been a fixture for 9 years. That secures the position across from Jordan. We still have Galette and Wilson in the development department of the exact skill we are aiming for. Hunt could end up being a JPP fast development story (or like Graham). More likely he will be a 3rd down player to start and may increase (like Hicks). I'm not wanting a could or may player at mid 1st Rd. I want RDE filled for years to come. Galette or Wilson could still come on stronger as pass rush riches problem to deal with. We'll have to see where Hunt's draft stock settles. He's still more of a wildcard to be defined than a surefire elite 1st Rder.

It's way too early to tell for sure, but of the few mock drafts I've looked at, they had him going late first or early second round. At the combine is where guys like this usually jump up a few picks if they test well. (See JPP & Tyson Jackson)

We need solid defenders in rounds 1&3(and we need to pray that somehow we get our second round pick back) We need to get honey badger in 4th round. (First round pothead talent lol Solid defender and return specialist) Round 5 and 6 try to get some offense or replacements for the guys that we have to let go We need a kicker in the 7th round

Well depending on what mock boards you look at, Ansah, Richardson, Jordan, Hankins, and even Mingo float around the Saints projected pick at #16. I watched Hunt destroy Fresno St and would love the Saints to grab him. Of course see how he does at the combine, but I think his potential is unreal. But I can understand wanting a supposed "can't miss" but how on earth do we really know if the above mentioned guys are? Ellis sure panned out right? Right? I just think if the Saints are giving the D over to Spags, then Hunt is the prototype for him. Either way, I hope Dicktator Goofell gives the Saints back their 2nd rounder and they get another solid D player.

His combine numbers will be god-like. I'll be waiting with popcorn. He was triple-teamed a lot this whole season after having a coming out party his Junior year. As a TCU fan - I've watched him a handful of times vs the Frogs and in games leading up to them. He's going to be really REALLY good. ETA: He's got a, what? - 82"-84" wingspan and is expected to put up 35-45 in the 225 bench, sub 4.7 40 time and a 36" vertical. Yikes.
