Torshiro says northern Indiana boys and southern Indiana boys don't hang. Or, is it Catholics and Protestants? Rust belt vs. farmers?

Well, that's possible. But academic standards wax and wane at ND. I think they're tired of losing.

I'd like to put Notre Dame's head in a boot (country castration).

Not worried about ND in LA, at least at this point. If they can sustain success on the field then the draw is much more of a factor. Admissions at ND will always limit the kids they can take (honestly would have an effect on which LA kids they could actually take) but there are plenty of extremely talented kids that have the grades to get in their. They've got some studs in this class and will continue to get some. Weis recruited a few highly ranked recruiting classes when he was there. They just have to be selective and not miss a lot. The change in their success on the field(relatively as I think this year is just one of those abberation years) coicides with their success in the south in recruiting. The majority of their best/key players are from the south. Kelly is doing a good job evaluating and recruiting the right talent. I don't like the guy at all and have much disdain for ND as a whole but I give credit where it's due.

In the 60's, it seemed like Notre Dame was the only school on television, and folks all over the country (including LA) got their playback show on Sunday. There was a mystique about them, even if you hated them. Later came their own network contract, so they looked to be set. Problem is, everybody is on TV all the time now, and ND's game is often matched up against the biggest SEC game on Saturday afternoon. They just don't have an advantage over other schools the way they once did. None of these kids today remember any ND glory, and telling them about the 50's and 60's doesn't measn anything to them. Unless they start appearing in the playoffs most years, the majority of kids, especially in the south, will stillsee the SEC is where they want to be. As far as ND's academic standards for athletes being a hindrance to them, it seems like they've always recruited most of the players the other big schools are chasing. Their entrance requirements for the general student populace may be higher, but I think they'll find a way to get most of their recruits in school. They've done it with recruits from LA and MS who weren't Rhodes Scholars, so much of it is just to puff their chest for show.

Yes it's a Catholic thing and plus Notre Dame is a special place. It's different there. Hell its freakin Notre Dame. When the Irish are good they seem to grab a few of our new orleans guys on occasion. Thank Goodness its very cold up there and a little subdued for most of our "playas"

You are wrong about the academic standards. It is more difficult to get into Notre Dame than it is LSU, period. It hurts them on the football field, but that's the kind of standards that are instilled there. When every school in the country was using the redshirt to get 5 yrs from their players, ND was the very last to succumb and went many years at this huge disadvantage. Most of your thread is correct. The mystique of ND football will never be the same but its still Notre Dame, one of the most well-known universities in the world. They are not a show.

They wouldn't go to bowls for years and years, but then they gave in to the money and prestige, just as every other school did. You mentioned their change on redshirts. They've essentially joined the ACC to protect themselves. They are no different than any other school. And if they have to soften the requirements to get a few recruits in school, they will do so. Great academic institution, without question, but they have shown time & time again that they are no longer set apart from other schools when it comes to intercollegiate athletics.

Those were different times. Back then, if you wanted to play on TV, you pretty much needed to play for Michigan, Ohio State, Alabama or Notre Dame. Not a problem now. LSU is on as much as anyone.

Is it surprising that they're offering the top players from around the country while trying to capitalize on being one of the most least deserving title shot participants in recent memory? Simple fact of the matter is that this isn't 1992 and I'm not concerned about ND or their complete a-hole of a coach.
