| Eric Gordon was playing chess while yall were thinking checkers (Posted on 12/21/12 at 9:49 pm)
quote:
Gordon told Yahoo! Sports he regretted those words, but there was a reason he was so cavalier. “Of course I did [regret it],” Gordon said. “But that was the only way to push the table on the Hornets. To get a deal done I was willing to negotiate. My agent and I were going through negotiations with them. But they weren’t leaning into really giving me one. So I had to ride with Phoenix and from Day 1 they weren’t playing games.” Gordon was intent on getting a maximum deal and signing it prior to trying out for the Olympic team in mid-July. He felt the Hornets were taking advantage of his restricted free-agent status by taking their time. Without the maximum offer he sought from the Hornets, Gordon instead signed with Suns on July 10. The Hornets eventually matched the deal.
LINK that, or just great revisionist history to save his arse

He's so full of shite. Either he and his agent are complete retards or they knew damn well that the Hornets were going to match a max deal if he got offered one. If no one thought he was worth a max, then there's no reason for the Hornets to cost themselves money by offering him a max deal immediately.

well he said the hornets were dragging their feet they didnt make him a qualifying offer when they could and waited for him to hit the market he said he had to buy into phoenix wholeheartedly to spur the hornets into action seems fishy, but it is plausible

Well considering that you have to make a qualifying offer for the player to remain restricted, that's just not true.

* max offer, maybe? i remember there was a deadline that passed where the hornets could have done something and they didnt. it was because he had been hurt forever or something and it kinda made sense from the front office side, but it apparently pissed him off

That shite ain't plausible. The front office said they would match before he got an offer. He could have simply signed the damn thing and shut his mouth. frick THIS GUY! TRADE HIS arse ASAP!

Yeah, his injuries are exactly why we didn't offer him a max deal off the bat. If he had been healthy for ~70 games last season and put up his typical 19/3/4 while playing very good defense, they would have offered him a max deal right away. But the guy can't reasonably get his panties in a bunch for the way we handled it, whining about how he's worth a no-brainer max, then miss then miss the first half of the next season. If he were somehow "cut" from the Hornets today, he'd get less on the market than he got from us. He should be grateful, not butthurt.

Because if nobody else gave him a max offer. They would just have to match the highest. Thus saving money

Because of his injuries, there was a shot that no one would offer him a max deal. If the best offer Gordon had gotten was 4 years, $44m, the Hornets could have matched it and saved money.

Gordon is the old CBA mentality player... be 'hurt' and collect a check. When he plays there is no denying the talent. I guess he has his reasons for dicking around.

so they didn't feel he was worthy of a max deal until someone else gave him one? and he did what he had to do to go get that max deal? seems like both sides acted in their respective self-interests...

1) He hasn't done enough in his career to get that money. 2) You don't offer a max right off the bat to a RFA when essentially you have all the chips and cards. You offer the qualifying and see what the market says.

Why wouldn't the hornets want to save money? It goes to other player salaries not their pockets. That extra money just goes in EG's pockets. That he doesn't even play for

giving a player that played 9 games last year and has been plagued with injuries since coming in the league a max deal without seeing his market value first when all you have to do is match to keep him would be very poor decision making. why would you overpay if you don't have to?
