Yeah, it's exactly the opposite. It's actually cheaper to fly THROUGH ATL than it is to fly TO ATL, which I've always found to be a bit crazy. Flights to ATL are usually higher than they should be. I actually had to book inside of the 2 week window a few months ago and the fare was right at $800. I just drove that week.

Train to Bham from NOLA is $54. You could certainly get a rental after that, drive the 2.5 hours, and have a car.

Airline pricing is all about supply and demand, basic economics. Since supply is pretty much fixed on a day-to-day basis, prices will increase when the demand for those tickets increase, obviously. I don't think there will be any discounted tickets especially if you are trying to fly out of Louisiana.

Are you talking airfare for the bowl game? It's New Year's Eve. The HOLIDAYS. It's not going to be cheap.

You can take the train all the way to ATL. There's also MEGABUS out of NOLA to ATL and only stops in Mobile and Montgomery.

i lived in hotLanta for a few years & alotta us liked that option.. FOR the record on flying there: Hartsfield, as the Delta home/hub, seems to play games-- i've always thought they over-booked & over-priced fares quite often; Seemingly made no sense: a few yrs ago, i bought a last-minute ticket during holiday-rush & was cheaper than the prices i'd paid for a year or 2 leading up that that point.. go figure.

Why do airlines make it so hard to book one way tickets? I want to buy the cheapest option and that often means flying out with one airline and leaving with another. Is this due to 9/11?

Christmas/New Year is always a very busy time and tickets are priced accordingly. That said, Delta is a price-gouging near monopoly. Check their competition ( if there is any for your itinerary). USAir connecting through CLT is often cheaper although connecting is a hassle.

They've got algorithms out the arse that justify their fares and the timing for which fares are priced.

They don't I can go on any of the major carries and click "one way" and book my flight. Or better yet, I can compare via Kayak allowing broken fares.

Southwest now flies to Atlanta. Check it out of New Orleans if not AirTran is much cheaper to ATL than Delta

AirTran doesn't exist anymore. And WN is not always cheaper. Major myth.

I live in ATL and, yep, Delta jacks its prices to/from appropriate cities, especially for the post season. They know LSU travels well and that Clemson fans will drive down. No surprises here. Move on.
