One of my all time favorite albums of any genre is Outkast's ATLiens. Timeless. Magical.

Outkast -- ATLiens is my favorite album of all time.

quote:

I miss Big Boi and Andre 3k rappin together. They need to reunite somewhere in the Egyptian desert sands not far from Mokattam Hills, smoke a fatty, and put pen to paper.

The chemistry that they have together as rappers is second to none. They are both great rappers in their own right, but when they're stacking verses on top of each other back and forth, it just adds a different element. It just sounds gooooood.

Case in point, first verse of Wheelz of Steel

Big Boi:
Once upon a time not long ago
When the player from the Pointe didn't have no flow
A **** hit me for my tennis shoes, walking to the store
Caught a **** slippin, but now I lay it to the floor
just like carpet, cause I got the heat in my rhythm
Momma nay not, never braggin just to stay knot
Even when I was a younger lad I learned my lesson
Never talked to strangers in the trap and answered questions

Andre:
The Pope and his folks got us under a scope
But for unknown reasons cause we don't sell dope
That you distribute, we don't contribute, to your clandestine
activity, my soliloquy, may be hard for some to swallow
But so is cod liver oil
You went behind my back like Bluto when he cut up Olive Oyl
Two things I hate lies and thieves they make my blood boil
Boa constricted, on my soul that they call

Just every mini-verse flows naturally into the next mini-verse. And the resulting whole of the verse is that much more amazing.

So, yeah, they're bette as a group. Maybe they don't need each other, but I need them to need each other.

quote:

However, Big Boi just dropped a new solo album. I was very hesitant to even listen to it. But an ethereal voice summoned me

Did you not listen to Big Boi's first solo album? It was good.

Big Boi -- Train pt. 2

quote:

If you like it, check out the rest of his album.

What other tracks do you consider standout tracks?

This album was trash, imo. I'll still wait for new Andre music before bragging about Big Boi... that's just me

Yeah, that's just you.

Andre is still doing it and still doing it well. His songs and features arent very radio friendly so you hardly hear them but his verses are still top notch

It's a lot harder to put out two good albums than to drop verses on other people's tracks.

I think rap music has dropped off quite a bit as a whole, but to deny the epic greatness that was My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy is to simply admit you never heard it.

Since you haven't listened to it, I suggest moving it to the top of the queue. It's a masterpiece. Kanye will literally lose his mind at some point in the probably not-so-distant future because he'll try to top it, and he'll fail. And he'll keep failiing. He'll never top MBDTF.

Epic greatness, stop it. I listened to it, especially the songs that were all over the place when it came out. Kanye does have some of the best beats I've heard, I'll give him that

I liked WTT better, I'm not saying MBDTF is not a great album, but I find myself finding little nuances in WTT everytime I listen to it.

re: Big Boi - One Half Outkast...Super Badass New Album!

Here's why I like the new Big Boi album...

Lately I've been hating music in general. Personally, I feel that music has become stagnant as a whole (with exception to a few diamonds in the rough) over the past 5 - 10 years. My opinion. No need to debate.

However, I've been on an electronic pop binge lately. This genre is where I'm finding more interesting bands that are simply amazing (ie. Van She, The Presets, JJ, Sinkane, Jamie Woon, Phantagram, etc.).

I read an article that interviewed Big Boi. He was inspired to do this new album after touring the world with up-and-coming electronic acts. At first he was hesitant about the mishmash in genres, but he came to love the electronic music acts he listened to each and every night.

He considered his odd touring experience as a very positive awakening and invited a few of those bands (ie. Phantogram and Little Dragon) to help him create a rap album that's almost equally an electronic album.

He's pushing the envelope, trying to take rap into the future instead of creating the same shite staind auto-tuned rap album that most other rap artists clog the music environment with.

Stand out songs:

1) Lines (with Phantagram). This song is nearly half bad arse rap and half electronic music. Odd mixture but perfect.

2) CPU (with Phantogram). Once again, this can be viewed as a Big Boi rap or a Phantogram song. I like how he showcases the guest artists and sometimes gives them equal time.

3) Apple of my Eyes. Just good.

And, he isn't rapping about money and hoes, blinged out diamond watches and ferraris. There's more substance in his message.

It's truly a great album. I thought for sure I had my top 5 list for 2012 albums finalized. No way somebody is dropping an album in December that cracks my top 5.

Daddy Fat Sax gone and done just that.

I love the stylistic diversity from track to track. Don't get me wrong, there is something to be said for an album that sticks to a sonic theme -- this is true of ATLiens, and is part of why it's my favorite album of all time -- but there is also something to be said for an album that shows no hesitancy to experiment with various types of sounds and structures. Big Boi's latest does the latter, and does it well.

Also, Big Boi's flow is as good as ever if not better. Most rappers get worse with age. Think about how terrible Snoop Dogg is right now. Dude used to be great. Others rappers just stop rapping altogether. When was the last time we've heard anything from Method Man?

Big Boi is obviously very dedicated to his craft, because he can still flow with the best of them.

i'm glad you posted this, as it was exactly what i said in my last post, only worded nicer. he's not trying to push the envelope, he's trying to sell records. he's trying to stay relevant. i think he's tired, and spittin the same tired raps he's been spittin for 15 years.

also Aquemini > ATLiens

Bombs Over Baghdad is still my fave track from them tho, and i wish they would have quit after that album. i've seen them several times and they could rock shite like no other rap group i've ever heard. the first 3 albums will remain classics to me, and the fourth had some great moments. everything since is, meh.

and people talking good about kanye makes me want to kill myself. i'd rather listen to anyone on this board rap.
