The same thing can be said about a vast majority of genetic traits. Those three letters (epi-) are really tripping you up, aren't they.

Very few disorders/phenotypes in general are strictly, 100% due to genetics. Most of them require an interplay between heredity, environmental, and other factors.

But do realize that statement is a far, far cry from your thread title "So it turns out being gay is not in the DNA," right?

heritable changes in gene expression caused by mechanisms other than the underlying DNA sequence.

that's all i've got.

What is "political" about this story?

That would explain why it persists

it would be, if he were correct

The term "epigenetics", has been used to describe processes which haven't been demonstrated to be heritable such as histone modification, there are therefore attempts to redefine it in broader terms that would avoid the constraints of requiring heritability.

I know a set of identical twins - one is a flaming 'mo, the other is straight as an arrow.

quote:

Although identical twins have the same genotype, or DNA, they have different phenotypes, meaning that the same DNA is expressed in different ways.

Traits determined by phenotype, such as fingerprints and physical appearance, are the result of "the interaction of the individual s genes and the developmental environment in the uterus." Thus, a DNA test can't determine the difference between identical twins, while a simple fingerprint can.

But we have a place to start! If we can get those King Penguins and Chimpanzees to just control some life choices then no more gay animals, and then we'll know how to stop making queers and dykes!

P.S. Your thread title should read, "So it turns out being gay really isn't a choice." (And yes, the "life choices" remark was sarcasm regarding the OP's assertion that we can eventually control for it like obesity, which is certainly an area we've already excelled in by the way. )

From Wikipedia:
quote:

A well-known example is that of the honey bee. Larvae that are fed with a pollen and nectar diet develop into worker bees, while those fed royal jelly develop into queens, growing larger and with different morphology.

We just need to quit feeding them royal jelly.

Fail.

Those are not "gay" animals. Those are merely acts of dominance.

I have been saying this on here for years. Epigenetics =/= choice though. Definitely has a lot to do with environment. Not a black and white issue.

In the mental health realm, schizophrenia is looking more and more like a disorder that is largely influenced by epigenetic factors. For some reason, I can't convince any of my patients to stop being psychotic.

Cannibals, murderers, and rapists have an out if we are locked out of decision making for their actions, because they were "born that way"

The animal kingdom argument...dolphins brutally murder other dolphins and porpoises that encroach on their turf, as do apes and other "smarter" beasts in the wild...this is a dangerous game to say man has no self-control, or control over their own thoughts.

On the flip side, really, no harm no foul...it's just the idea that man has been superior to bast because we have a choice, is frankly being cast aside

You peoples sick obssessions with homosexuality is just plain bizarre.

I think many of these homophobic Evangilicals have deeply repressed homosexual feelings that they really need to come to grips with.

Tell that to the penguins who literally build a home for themselves and try to hatch stones.

re: So it turns out being gay is not in the DNA

What's ironic is that the Bible explains all of this exactly. But, since "thinking" people are anti-religion, except for the religion of "science," then they cannot accept anything that the Bible says that might contradict their presuppositions.

Of course, now that Science is saying that Homosexuality is not genetic, then Science is being considered to be wrong as well. It seems that the only thing that is seen as True is what conforms to the popular presupposition, which means that we are back to witchcraft and magic instead of actual Science. C.S. Lewis predicted this in The Abolition of Man and it is coming true before our very eyes.

The Bible says that all men are born into sin, but that sin manifests different for people. Without a "gay gene," perhaps what scientists are finding is the evidence of original sin. But, for some, the "sin" manifests as homosexuality. For others, it manifests in other ways - in ways that people seem to have no control over.

But, since it is passe to believe in God or the Bible anymore, that can't be right - or that's what will be said. It must be genetic. Oh wait. Science cannot prove that it is genetic no matter how much testing is done. That's ok. We'll just keep testing until we find out that it is genetic because we just KNOW it is genetic. We BELIEVE that it must be because gay people tell us so.

And they laugh at the Intelligent Design folks as having an agenda!

Based on your comprehension skills I bet you read that article and it convinced you that being gay is a choice.

That isn't irony and the bible explains virtually nothing, but for some bits of history woven into the mythology.

WTF are you talking about? Did you read the article and all of the posts? It's heritable and related to epigentics...do you know what any of that is? Is it ironically described in the Bible? Idiot.
