I hear what you're saying. I just don't think you're hearing what I'm saying though.
What makes you think he would "make it" on American Idol. Eric Clapton is an artist. He excels at doing "his thing". If he were on American Idol, he would have to sing/perform one of Journey's greatest hits....Or maybe a Queen song. He would be in a "who can sing loudest or highest" competition. He would not have the opportunity to deliver a nuanced slow hand strat solo. He would get stuck singing "We are the Champions". And they would vote him off "b/c he didn't nail it". The kid who "nailed it" would 'make it'. Of course that's all that kid can do (sing loud/over the top).
Again: artist have something to say. It's more difficult for them to say it these days. Stars just want someone to hear them say what someone else already said.

Neither would this guy, but they're music giants.
And the guy from the last video wrote an incredible album called War Elephant when he was 19. He did every lyric, every note, everything on his own. He was getting black out drunk, falling in love, getting his heart broken... he wasn't getting ready for the beauty pageant that is American Idol.

Ahh, pompous would be if I said certain things without provocation.. when someone say's I haven't read any of what I've claimed, yet I've continually referenced those works in my posts it's frustrating. As it stands, I'm a loser bringing up my reading achievements to people online, but pompous I am not (okay maybe a little).

I'm not a fan of American Idol, nor can think of any artist which they have produced which I enjoy.
But your comparison of American Idol to the American political process is mixed up, unless American Idol is rigged.
In fact the American political process of today is generally closer to the music industry that created and allowed Clapton, Cobain, Hank William to grace your ears.
Those guys started small and were vetted by investors who then packaged them into something you could consume, using PR to convince you they were the real deal.
Now, what you should be worried about is the masses using a system of direct democracy like American Idol, in choosing its leaders.

You're coming at it from a totally different angle.
The point I'm making is the things a person has to do to ascend in a political career is repelling to many people with a certain admirable quality to their character.
Just like signing up for American Idol is repelling to musicians that have a certain character which enables them to use their talents to create great music, talent is just one part, character is what's important. As George C. Scott said in the Hustler "Everybody's got talent. I got talent. You think you can play big-money straight pool or poker for forty straight hours on nothing but talent? You think they call Minnesota Fats the best in the country just cause he got talent? Nah, Minnesota Fats's got more character in one finger than you got in your whole skinny body".
It has nothing to do with having a golden voice and singing lyrics someone else wrote for you, the true songwriters/musicians wouldn't do the 'mickey mouse' song and dance that is American Idol. Just like most truly great people wouldn't do the crap that they'd have to do to rise in their political careers. Yet, millions of people sit around every season and think they're voting on the next big thing, but they're not. Just like we sit around and think we're voting for a politician that is the next big thing. But the truth is, the nature of the game itself usually repels the person with that combination of talent and character.

Your obsession with putting down anything I write is remarkable.
SNL? My Morning Jacket has headlined giant music festivals the last couple years. In 2011 they headlined the biggest one in the country, 100k people were at their set. Their lead singer does countless side projects and is huge in the music scene. He has even played at the White House.

I am not unique in that attribute, though obsession is a bit harsh. Most of your threads I don't even participate but rather just enjoy them from the comedic entertainment they provide. Most of your thoughts are bizarre and obtuse just like your thinking that because you like this band that plays to maybe 1% of the population that they are "giants".

Then why don't you educate the board on who the noble politicians are. Your examples of musicians has not been impressive.

Oh boy..
I'm not saying we have noble politicians. You missed the point. It would help if people knew what was going on in our music industry to allow this analogy to make sense, it was a lame duck thread.. to a different audience this would make more sense.

The points is people with certain admirable qualities to their character usually avoid getting into politics because of what must be done to ascend the ranks. Didn't think it was really that difficult..
