North Korea has always wanted to take over South Korea and become one unified country. That is North Korea's end game.

And they do that by destroying Seoul, and significant numbers of US personnel stationed in the vicinity and then calling down the rath of the US nuclear might on themselves?

Yeah, that is a war they will win.

nuclear warhead on a rocket within the next three months, which is I'd say pretty reasonable.

Best Korea can barely even detonate nukes in underground bunkers. Creating a nuclear warhead small enough for a warhead is very difficult. It has to be small, able to travel thousands of miles, and withstand extreme temperatures/vibrations. North Korea still has a long way to go for nuclear ICBMs.

I'm not saying they would win, but they are insane. Some of them actually think they could win in a war

Yet in the past 6 years, they have gone from nothing to detonating two bombs, launching two short range missiles, a long range missile which just delivered a satellite into space, and according to some sources, they expect they already have miniaturized nuclear weapons for short range missile delivery.

I'd say they're perhaps further along than we might want to give them credit for.

re: The North Korean Nuclear Threat

successfully launching a rocket after 4 (or is it 5?) tries is a long way from attaching a nuclear warhead to one and making it land where you want.

quote:

"There's still a lot of work that needs to be done if they're actually going to mount a nuclear device or a weapon on a rocket," he said.
"The good news is we have a fair amount of time. The bad news is that if we're not proactive, and if we don't figure out a way to curtail North Korea's actions, they're going to continue to develop and learn more and over the long term we're going to have to deal with it in a much more difficult situation," he said.

quote:

"We don't know if the one in 2009 was a nuclear device rather than a weapon itself. They might need additional refinement and testing of a weaponised as well as a miniaturized version that can fit on a warhead," said Bruce Klingner, Senior Research Fellow for Northeast Asia in the Asian Studies Center at The Heritage Foundation.

the leaders of NK know they would get slaughtered if they attacked SK. they just rally the propaganda

they barely launch a missile and tell their people it's the most advanced weapon on earth...and the people believe it, because they literally do not know any better. it's a way to keep the people in line to accept the horrible living conditions

This, is what authoritarian regimes rely upon.

But in fairness our Evangelical dolts here are at sea on NK, the Bible offers no foreign policy guidance on NK; other than the default mode of turn them to glass.

I really can't fathom how people are afraid of North Korea

They launched a missile...when was the first missile of this type that we launched? Honest question. I'd have to think 1950s

re: The North Korean Nuclear Threat

the leaders of NK may be a little crazy, but they don't want to get slaughtered and lose that position of power and opulence

they are still motivated by self interest

people like to act like that self interest would lead them to trying to take over SK, but in reality they do just enough to (1) re-visit aid negotiations and (2) display power to the population to keep them in line.

60s probably. CT would know

and it's pretty obvious china isn't exactly sharing military secrets with NK

if NK goes berserk and gets taken over, china will have to deal with the refugees and they don't want to do that

i don't think china truly supports NK like a lot of people imagine. i think NK is kind of like their retarded little brother they just try to keep relatively in check so they don't have to actually deal with it

re: The North Korean Nuclear Threat

I doubt we had a functional warhead on a rocket with a good chance of actually launching and hitting a target till the early 60's.

I suppose NK with this launch puts them into the late 50's, some subsurface detonations and early rocketry pre Sputnick like our Vanguard a liquid filled missile that blew up on the pad regularly. I suppose they have better technical information from espionage but terrible development and production.
