sky's still there, my man. it's true that it is in danger of falling like its been for the last 200 years, but to act like this is the end of days is a little silly

I am. I am 33 and I know I will never see any of that money that is taken out of my check every two weeks.

"falling like it's never been..." you mean? Or do you think the fall will be like any other mild recessions of the past?

I bet you have no clue about the last 200 years of our financial history.

i wouldn't say this spending/deficit/debt problem is as serious as the British burning Washington D.C. or a world war

I think it'll get worse before it gets better. Our political system as it exists today is broken because politicians vote in their own self-interest and no politician is going to vote to raise taxes and cut social programs. We'll wimper along with a weak economy until a leader emerges to get something done. This hyper-partisan BS from both sides is doing more harm than good. Both sides will continue to villfy the other until they realize nothing is getting done and then we can come together and compromise. The looming austerity measures that will kick in after these negotiations fail will be a good thing. The proverbial punch in the nose to get the country's attention.

but no, i dont think this situation is as dire as some the US has faced in the past. I do think this hyper partisan, single-issue, lowest common denominator brand of political discourse (from both sides) is bad for the country as a whole and is retarding progress

I used to get a statement in the mail showing how much I had in SS. I stopped getting those about 4-5 years ago.

rabblerousers

So we should be complacent?

We are urged to sit back and relax and are made to look like fools when we demand our government do our bidding, not the other way around. All the while your fearless leader sparks unrest across the globe, including in our great nation where he leveraged the defensive killing of his non-existant sons doppleganger to insight hate filled rage, riots and middle-school walk outs. Called on vunabulls across the country to get in the faces of a political party who was somehow threatening their livelihood (welfare) when not even holding a majority in either house and now with an opportunity to quell the violence of the union thugs in Michigan he spouts some inflammatory jerk off non-sense about low wages.

And we are ridiculous for wanting some political passion from the base? Troll much?

OT: I'm only 24 right now and I have a feeling I'll be in the same boat. I just tell myself I'm paying for my grandfathers SS right now and that keeps me from smoking from the ears.

im not saying there isn't a problem

im saying it isnt as dire as some of you like to think it is

at the end of the day, this country is still the most advanced and greatest society that ever existed on this planet. let that sink in for a bit. this is just another trial and tribulation, but we're capable of handling it.

it's almost like there is something cathartic for some of you in this doom and gloom talk.

money that was stolen from the Social Security "Trust Fund" for general spending purposes,

This should piss you off enough to affect change in govt spending. You should not be angry about the Social Security but what they have and are doing with the funds.

The gov stopped printing them to save money (a pittance, I'm sure, but nonetheless).

You can get your SS statement online now, though:

Thank Bill Clinton, that was how they "Balanced" the budget in the 90's

Maybe so on the latter part, but the change to allow conversion of Social Security funds to treasury bills happened under Ronald Reagan and a Democrat-controlled House and Republican-controlled Senate.

re: I'm a man. I'm 40.

I'm just curios.. you guys that are pissed (as you should be).

Do you have any hate towards central banking? The Federal Reserve is the most prominent one today, but this goes way back into our history. The First Bank of the United States (which was chartered by Congress by privately operated) was a central bank in late 17 and early 1800's. Due to unpopularity with the people, the renewal of the banks charter was voted down in 1811, within 5 months we were at war.

I don't want to get off track, I'm just asking if the central banking and money creation/circulation is on your radar. I'm asking because it seems to me that the focus is on spending and government programs (not that you're incorrect in being angry about these things, you should be).

That's why you need to teach your kids to say frick the government and own their own business and skim as much off the top and hide it in a rainy day fund. Teach the kids how to run landry mats or car washes. Pay enough taxes to make the business look legit. frick the govt.

It's your fault for paying into the system. You should quit and live off government assistance. Accelerate the collapse.
