| Is the NFL taking a turn towards the more athletic quarterbacks? (Posted on 12/12/12 at 6:49 pm)
Just watching football this year (and some of last year), it seems like NFL teams are moving towards more athletic quarterbacks. Off the top of my head, Mike Vick, Cam Newton, RGIII, Russell Wilson, Jake Locker, Tim Tebow, and Colin Kaepernick. It just seems like they can do so much more with an offense. And these guys have all been spectacular (aside from Vick who was in the past, and Tebow who had mild success). Do you, as a fan, foresee more quarterbacks like these being chosen over the normal, every-day pocket passer?

No. I know a couple of those guys are very young and their futures are 'to be determined' but look at the most successful QBs in the league.. Brady, the Mannings, Rodgers, etc. are all pocket passers.

I think it's moving this way because there are so many qb's now coming from a spread fast paced system.

I think that is a trend but I think some of your examples are terrible...

He can indeed but I think he is more a pocket passer type and can't be considered a 'running QB' like several of those listed in the OP.

I guess I should word it different. I haven't seen the Colts utilize his running ability on designed running plays for the quarterback. It could be just me not having been able to watch them, someone correct me if I'm wrong. I see Andrew Luck has a damn good athlete in his own right, but more of a pocket passer than doesn't have a game-plan designed around his athleticism.

Luck has 49 attempts for 223 yards & 5Tds, but Locker is more athletic, he can hit a curveball.

Quarterbacks who run regularly are going to get hurt......period. Also will have shorter careers. Doug Flutie and Fran Tarkington are the only ones I know that are the exception. Give me a pure pocket passer every time.

Seemed like this was a trend a few years back (see Vick's success) and then teams started to go away from it and back towards traditional pocket passers. Now, maybe its just my opinion, it seems like the mobile guys are more polished passers. RGIII and Kaep both threw for 3,000+ yards while rushing for 1,000 at some point.

Cam and locker have not been spectacular. Wilson and kaepernick haven't played well enough long enough to call them spectacular

You think RGIII is more polished than the leagues pocket passers? And Kaep whoever that is?

I agree with this. The only dual threat QB that may be able to pull off a career as a duel threat is Cam. I think this because of his size. Being bigger I think he will be able to take more hits than the smaller QB.

Rodgers is pretty athletic, at least much more than Brady and Manning. He just chooses to use it mainly in the pocket.
