| Grunt calls (Posted on 12/12/12 at 5:05 pm)
Anybody hunting in Louisiana ever have success with grunt calls? By success I mean actually have a deer respond to the call. Couple coworkers just bought the new extinguisher grunt call and love it fwiw

I called an 8pt in 5 times one morning. They def work but a lot of times you won't even know if you are in the woods. Deer can come in withing 100 yards and circle down wind and if he doesn't get any other indications there is a deer there he'll leave unnoticed

I had a lot of success with grunt call in Woodville MS area. It really only works when rut is on and like FTF says, most of the time you get no response early in the season. But I can tell you the times I've had bucks come in they were in my wheelhouse before I could take the call out of my mouth and raise my rifle. ETA: If you are hunting anywhere North of Baton Rouge , I would definitely be grunting every so often because when it works it's unbelievably cool. Maybe once series every hour.

Ive had some luck, but like one of the responses below ole buck.cam in hard from about 400 yards across cut over and was within 20 yards when I shot. He pin pointes.the location and I only did one series

Been grunting in deer for 20 years. Very successful part of my arsenal!

Very little luck with them. Friend called in a 4 point last week.

I don't grunt much, (because I'm afraid of overdoing it), but I do have a primos can that I use. That little feller works pretty well. The only buck I've ever shot came after I used the can. I was in a head of woods, with a pasture between me and another head. I hit the can, and a couple minutes later, here he comes, sprinting across the pasture from the other head, straight at me. It was a neat thing to watch.

I saw a buck a week and half ago about 125 yards away from me. I grunted one time and the fricker ran like a pussy... I don't know what I did wrong but he literally ran like a fricking pussy.

Which one? I've used the "The Long Can" and I haven't gotten any success from it...

I don't even bother with grunt calls but always carry a bleat can. I have used them in LA and MS and they will turn a buck on dime during the rut.

Just the regular can. I bought a long can after the regular can worked, thinking bigger is better, but it never called in a deer so I switched back to the regular can. I used it opening weekend and had a spike and decent 8 come by about 10 mins later.

I must be using it wrong ... I wish I knew this a week and half ago, would have used it instead of the grunt caller

I've hunted with a guy that rattles up a good buck every season. He will use the can then follow it with some grunts. Supposedly simulates a buck running a doe. I have a problem with over using it. I sat in a stand 4 hours grunting one morning. Got down and walked 100 yards and jumped a buck bedded with a doe. Obviously he rather frick than fight
