| Bradley Dale Peveto question (Posted on 12/12/12 at 4:50 am)
So what's the story here? I've seen comments on other boards that range from "glad to see him get somewhere like Kentucky" to seething hate ( ). I'm curious as to the back story behind such a range of LSU fan emotions? I have a feeling may be necessary.

He was the "veto" half of the infamous Mal-veto Co-DC experiment in 2008. Majority of the replies will be bbq/food related -img or text.

He took the reigns of a defense that had plenty of young talent but no clue how to game plan or make adjustments. Our QB situation certainly didn't help though. I'm not sure I'll ever figure out how Danny McCray could look so lost on an SEC field, and several years later turn out to be a valuable starting safety for the Dallas Cowboys.

To my knowledge he was co-defensive coordinator in title only...Mallory ran the defense. He is a pretty good recruiter with most of his contacts being in east Texas. IMO he's a lot like Miles being that he is a good guy, loyal (to a fault sometimes), and is probably more respected in the coaching ranks than he is by the fans. He was scooped up pretty quick by Stoops. And I wouldn't call McCray a valuable starter for the Cowboys. To me, safety was their weakest position prior to the injuries on defense. He still looks lost in coverage a lot of the time. He is good on special teams though.

He is the starter now and third on the team in tackles. By the end of the season, he could lead the team in that category. As a Cowboys fan who watches every week, he has turned into one of our more reliable players. Anyway, Bradley Dale Peveto should be just fine as the Safeties coach at UK.

He was a really hard working guy. Was my neighbor for a few years. I might have only seen him a handful of times because he was always working busting his arse for Lsu. Won a national championship with Lsu and was given 1 year as co-dc. Not exactly the fairest shake of the stick, but I guess that's the way it is sometimes. Gave me his peach bowl shirt before leaving. Stand up guy.

Cowboys fan here too. But have missed some games this year, so maybe McCray has improved more than I realized. I'll check him out this weekend...I'll be going to my first game at the new stadium. I think Peveto will be just fine at Kentucky too. I thought NSU should have given him a couple more years. His record didn't tell the whole story.

Like somone else mentioned, Bradley Dale is loyal to a fault. Right after he got the job at Northwestern Sate, he was contacted by several SEC schools including Alabama about going there as an assitant and recruiting coordinator. He was offered 3 to 4 times what he was going to make and turned it down because he had made promises to his new staff.

I don't blame him for the 2008 season. I blame Pelini. He knew what he had in that senior laiden class and rode them to a head coaching job. He is the reason we lost the Arkansas game. The first string was worn out by the end of the season. If Pelini had gotten more of the younger players ready in 2007, we would have had more to work with in 2008.

You're going to get a range emotion on this subject. I'm going to try and be as factual as I can, and just say that he wasn't ready for his promotion to Co-DC. I get what Miles was trying to do, maintain continuity on defense at a time when he was preparing for a BCS title game. Pelini got the Nebraska job after the season was over, and Miles chose to promote from within and concentrate his efforts on the BCSCG, rather than conduct a search for a new DC. It didn't work out. LSU's defense in 2008 fell to 11th in the SEC, despite the fact that LSU returned a lot of the players from the second-ranked SEC defense in 2007 and all the defensive coaches save Pelini. In 2007 LSU gave up 19.6 ppg. In 2008, the Tiger defense gave up 25.9 ppg. Since Chavis became DC, we've never given up more than the 17.8 ppg in 2010. Take out 2010 and we've averaged about 16 ppg. The main problems with the Co_DC's were that they tried to "min-max" on every play...I.E. get what they thought were the best players in for each down. The result was that LSU defenders were usually confused and out of position on every play. After the 2008 season, Miles chose to clean house on defense. Rather than being fired, both Peveto and Mallory landed jobs at other schools. As a position coach, Peveto is liked by his players, and brings a lot of passion and energy to his job. Your players will be motivated, no doubt. Wish both BDP and UK luck with this.

You won't meet a nicer man that Peveto. I think he is a great football mind with a lot of passion who was in a little over his head as a "defensive coordinator" at LSU and then as a head coach at NWST. I think he will do just fine as a position coach and recruiter. UK got a really fine man and coach.

he went out on a high with that georgia tech game but my goodness, that 2008 defense was bad. it was so bad. and it's not like it was devoid of any talent. mallory sucked just as much. peveto was a solid special teams coach though, IMO.

Here's a fact about Peveto: In 2008 Saban tried to match what he was making on his newfound contract at Northwestern State and lure him to the Alabama staff as a Position coach. He wanted him on the staff for recruiting ties.

Or it could be because Tiger fans blame Mallory more than BDP for the crappy 2008 dfense.
