There are a ton of legacy factories in the rust belt because 60 years ago, getting the raw materials to the site was the most expensive part of manufacturing.
The unions have suffocated the manufacturers in the union states because they know that moving a factory is incredibly expensive and they can screw their employers. What they don't realize is that they are past the tipping point and manufacturing jobs aren't being added there.
The recently built plants have been mostly in RTW states. No?

Yeah I don't know what he's talking about all those factory jobs that where in the rust belt states have already moved south if they haven't left for china.

Most of the older factories existed in the north since the early part of last century and became unionized back then as well. If you look at the newer factories (domestic or foriegn) they are in the south. The Saturn factory was the first non-union factory operated by GM. A trip through the BMW factory will blow your mind in terms of how thier employees are treated. The cafeteria is a notch below a three star restaurant for what is offered. Everyone that works at it eats the same meal offerings from janitor to the manager of operations.
