Sure. I see no reason for the state.

Valid question. I say look at the intent of the founders of this country and the Constitution. They believed in a limited government. This government would cover essentials like military expenditure roads, bridges. When you start taking money away from people to give to others, that's when it becomes theft. Everyone can use a road, not everyone can use a welfare check
Ding, ding, ding! We have a winner! I don't mind taxes for roads, bridges, sewers, armies, navies, parks. That stuff all benefits the public at large. We all get to use the road, the army and navy are there to protect all of us, we can all use the parks, etc., etc. You start to lose me when you take from one individual and hand it over for the exclusive benefit of another individual.

Is there any particular reason that these services must be a monopoly provided by a government?

So theft is okay?

Debatable.

But I do mind. Why do you feel justified in taxation for those purposes?
quote:
You start to lose me when you take from one individual and hand it over for the exclusive benefit of another individual.
But what if the people that do support that feel it "all benefits the public at large"? In other words, you are ok with some taxation for things that you approve of, but are against it for others. The problem is that you have no philosophical consistency guiding you. What makes your pet projects better than someone else's pet projects?

There is no evidence Ben Franklin ever uttered those or similar words.

Not necessarily approve, tolerate is more accurate. I admit that some form of limited government (like fire) is beneficial. The thing is, if you let it get out of hand, it will burn your shite to the ground. The arguments about where to draw the line are endless. What make sense to me might not to you, and vice versa. No two people are exactly alike, especially their opinions. No doubt our system of government is flawed, but I still haven't seen anything out there I like better.

So let's not draw a compromising line. Theft is never okay. quote:

Exactly. Unlike you I do no think theft is a suitable foundation for a way of life.

You guys are all wrong on the source of the quote. But I can't look it up right now. It was before Franklin.

This is a hasty generalization. What foundations do you find suitable? Anarchy? Law of the jungle?
