| So it turns out being gay is not in the DNA (Posted on 12/12/12 at 10:38 am)
According to scientists and US News and World Report, its epigenetic. Its like passing obesity from parent to child. Something that essentially can be controlled if one chooses to. LINK
quote:
Long thought to have some sort of hereditary link, a group of scientists suggested Tuesday that homosexuality is linked to epi-marks — extra layers of information that control how certain genes are expressed. These epi-marks are usually, but not always, "erased" between generations.
quote:
Evolutionarily speaking, if homosexuality was solely a genetic trait, scientists would expect the trait to eventually disappear because homosexuals wouldn't be expected to reproduce.
quote:
There is compelling evidence that epi-marks contribute to both the similarity and dissimilarity of family members, and can therefore feasibly contribute to the observed familial inheritance of homosexuality and its low concordance between [identical] twins

1) I find the info and the research interesting. Thanks for bringing it 2) I honestly do not care if it is a straight <no pun> out CHOICE and some simply decided to like it. It bothers me not one little bit.

Nothing that I am familiar with would suggest that one can ultimately control gene function. I am no geneticist or biologist, however.

League champs, how do you control your epigenetics?

I bet the self-proclaimed "party of science", i.e. democrats, will not like or support this information.

It was my understanding that scientists had dismissed the idea of a single gay gene for a while now. This makes more sense I guess.

Conservatives don't believe in scientists.

In order for one to be gay, something acted upon that gene. In the case of obesity or diabetes or the honey bee changes, the cause is known, and can be addressed
quote:
A well-known example is that of the honey bee. Larvae that are fed with a pollen and nectar diet develop into worker bees, while those fed royal jelly develop into queens, growing larger and with different morphology
quote:
Swedish men who were exposed during preadolescence to famine in the 19th century were less likely to die of cardiovascular disease. If food was plentiful, then diabetes mortality in the grandchildren increased, suggesting that this was a transgenerational epigenetic inheritance

So you're saying that epigenetic, heritable traits can be controlled? How?

So it is not the choice of an individual that causes the change in gene function?

Did you read the article? It's not saying that gays aren't born that way, it's that the gayness isn't occurring on the DNA level but on the expression of the gene - it's a heritable trait - not a social condition. Changes nothing, does not validate the gay-away work of Michelle Bachman's gay husband.

One, by identifying the cause prior to birth. Two, by changing habits associated with the epigenetic change, thereby reducing or eliminating its passage; as in obesity. DNA cannot be altered by behavior, epigenetic characteristics can is my intial take from reading the news article

No...I think he's suggesting that the epigenetic problem can be identified and controlled so as to prevent homosexuality...we're basically where we already are. Gays are born gay...if you can ID, formerly the gene now the gene expression, you can control the gay.

Does this mean that gayness can be "addressed" with some kind of therapy, diet or drug?

Your thread title is going to lead a bunch of folks to jump, not read the article and post under the false belief that homosexuality is a choice.
