Only partially.

In essence, I believe the OP just asked why, when people move, they tend to maintain the political beliefs they had previously developed over the course of their entire lives. How could this be!?

I am not sure this is true.

Where I live, we have a lot of california transplants. And while many are liberals, a lot of them are conservatives. and they selected CO b.c its relatively libertarian (as far as states go).

Look to the laws of nature.

These people are the very definition of parasites. They use the host to their benefit, until the host is dead or crippled to the point at which they no longer benefit the parasite. The parasite then moves along to the next host.

Wyoming, Idaho and Montana are the new hosts for many California parasites.

In the science world, the parasite is not self-reflective. In its mind, it is just surviving the only way it knows how.

I think the transient progressive leaving states ruined by liberal/progressive policy is similar. They are not self-reflective, they are existing the only way they know how as well.

everyone I know from california has a job, most are very highly paid.

Now the people from WI, MN, and IA, they can be fricktards with no marketable skills.

I know a lot of californians with good jobs too. Many of them work for the government and are unionized. As a result of the unions, their pay is astounding relative to their jobs (Fish & Wildlife guys mostly). Their pensions are also insane. Even they realize that it is not sustainable, but they are fine playing along because they know that no other state would be stupid enough to allow this to happen.

I also know a couple that are attorneys in the Bay area. They make a very high income combined (considered really rich by Obama standards). Due to real estate costs and taxes, they live well below the standard of people with that type of income in other areas, such as Texas, Louisiana, etc.

It is all relative. They love San Francisco, so it is worth it for them to have their hard earned money eaten away. Doesn't make them smart. They could earn a similar income in Dallas or NOLA working for big firms and have a lot more money in the bank.

Montana and Idaho have picked up a lot of California refugees over the past few decades.

We have some here, but the ones who move here to "escape" California are mainly the libertarian leaning types from Northern Cal (SF really isn't Northern Cal) and they are pretty cool.

Strangely enough, some of our most liberal residents are those who "escaped" the South. Some guy and his wife I met from Lafayette were the worst.

yeah, none of the ones I know work for gov't. They are all software guys, and probably make in excess of $150k.

well I cna't speak for montana or idaho, but CO is really close to there. And most of the ones I met here are libertarian, or they moved here b.c of the cannabis industry and started grows. So again, not your prototypical leftist.

I think you are projecting on what you want to be. I don't think the liberals are moving from california in mass, certainly not the union types since they have a cushy jobs. I think those that are fleeing are more conservative.

Lots of government spending drives up the cost of living. High taxes are required generally to support this.

re: When people leave states like California, Illinois, and NY for economic reasons
Study Finds Californians Leaving In Droves For Better Run Governments

quote:

The U.S. Census reported last year that residents of California are fleeing the state at a faster rate than people leaving any other state. The most common state-to-state move in 2010 was California to Texas, according to the Census.

A study earlier this year by the University of Southern California found that California's population growth has slowed to about 1 percent annually, mainly due to fewer immigrants and an increasing number of Californians heading to other states.

Demographer Joel Kotkin told The Wall Street Journal that a major problem is that parts of the state are out of reach for the middle class.

"Basically, if you don’t own a piece of Facebook or Google and you haven’t robbed a bank and don't have rich parents, then your chances of being able to buy a house or raise a family in the Bay Area or in most of coastal California is pretty weak," Kotkin told the paper, adding that in his estimation, the state is run for the benefit of the very rich, the very poor, and public employees.

The Manhattan Institute says it based its findings on recent data from the U.S. Census, the IRS, California’s Department of Finance, the Bureau of Labor Statistics and the Federal Housing Finance Agency.

re: When people leave states like California, Illinois, and NY for economic reasons
As to the article linked above about this study...isn't it funny that Obama claims to be protecting the middle class...California has been implimenting liberal policy for decades and the middle class, non-government employees are the ones feeling the pinch and leaving california?

One could easily argue the exact same thing will be the future of the country under liberal progressive (Obama policy).

The rich will be fine (as is always the case), the ultra poor, government dependents will be fine and those employed by the government will be fine. It is the remainder...the middle class...that will be ultimately harmed by these policies.

How can intelligent people not see this happening?

One state not mentioned yet is New Hampshire. Liberals from Massachusetts move to New Hampshire to flee the high taxes. Then promptly raise the taxes in new Hampshire. I have a buddy who lives in New Hampshire and he calls them Ma-holes.

re: When people leave states like California, Illinois, and NY for economic reasons
So according to the Manhattan Institute people are leaving "CA in droves" but the population growth "has slowed to 1%." So that would be a net gain. With over 30 million people- still has to be in top of 5 states that people are moving to.

Yes. The medical term for this is "metastasis".

Yeah, because if you leave Louisiana and go to San Francisco, you're going to immediately change your political stances just by moving there. The reasoning on this board astounds me.
