Sounds like he wants a pre-built unit with warranties. Let him get an iPower or Alienware setup. No headaches.

if this is a laptop- I'd stay away from ibuypower. I got one from there and had to send it back twice to have it fixed under the one year warranty. it's now sitting in my closet taking up space. There was an issue with usb ports fricking up and blanking out the monitor. you could hear the machine booting up, but the monitor would never even attempt to come on. Friend of mine had the exact same problem.
That said- using these places to pre-build a machine and then price out the same components for building yourself is a good idea. Let the 13 year old put together his own machine, that way when shite starts to break he'll know how to work on it (assuming a desktop of course). If he's not interested in putting it together, Paige can use the hot girl skills to bat some eyelashes and get an it nerd like us to do it for her I'm sure.

Will need to go with an AMD build to stay on budget. Found a custom config on ibuypower - tower, monitor, keyboard, mouse, and 3 year service warranty for $1002. No guarantee it would ship before Christmas though.
eta: i dont see a way to link the config on ibuypower's website though

And screw putting it together. He got his iPhone taken away and couldn't even figure out how to put the SIM card or the battery in the go phone I got him

I may be wrong and I will let the others with more experience chime in but I would think you could lower your budget and still get a desktop that can play games. The fps may not be amazing and hardcore gamers may not like it but the kid is 13. He may not notice the difference.
