| Alienware x51 gaming computer (Posted on 12/12/12 at 9:25 am)
My son wants an Alienware computer. He's 13. I think he's just heard of it from a friend and doesn't know anything about it. I'm not impressed by the core i3 processor for one thing, not that I know about them either. Are there any better in this price range? The cheapest one is $700. It doesn't come with a monitor (obviously), does it matter what kind for gaming? And the keyboard and mouse are about $60 each I'm guessing he'll also need headphones. Any recs on those? So it's all adding up to a lot for a kid's Christmas IMO ETA or is this an instance where he's 13 and get him what his friend has? Oh and dell is out of stock. So unless they have them somewhere else I'm screwed

ETA: Oh wait, I thought this was about laptops. $700 isn't that bad. Add $200 for all periphials (Monitor, Keyboard, Mouse)

I don't know a lot about the gpu but i feel like that is expensive for a 2nd generation i3.

Yeah, I've seen gaming computers for a lot more but I'm not willing to spend more than $1000 on Christmas. That's absurd I forgot the main reason for asking was dell is out of stock I may be able to find it somewhere else, but is this really a good gaming computer is the other thing I want to know

You would be paying more for the name "Alienware" than paying for the exact computer without that name I would think.

Your son just wants the Alienware because it looks cool Just get him a better, faster acer or something and spend 300 less

Paige, Go here and see what you can do for the same price. Cyber Power PCs tend to be better build and last longer, and have better parts in them than Dell computers.

If buying an alienware, you are paying 20% premium for the name. If your kid wants a gaming computer, go over to either ibuypower or cyberpowerpc and order him a custom set up. Give us a budget and we will come up with something.

That's what I thought. Understandable but it's not like he'll be carrying it around and embarrassed to be seen with it Broke what does that even mean? I have no idea what to even look for. Links or would be awesome

Thank you, and jcole. I'd like to stay in the $1000 range, including monitor, keyboard and mouse. Though I could get other family members to get the keyboard, mouse and headset I know nothing about stuff like um, memory, graphics card or whatever the hell, processor, etc., except core i3 isn't great

Go to the links jcole4lsu posted please. I posted cyberpower pc, but I put a note on it as well. Those are the 2 places to go to get "excellent" laptops and PCs if you don't want to build your own.

I'm on my ipad so I can't link but just google acer gaming computer... Or any company. Toshiba, Lenovo, etc... It's really just about the specs on the inside. I actually don't game on pc but I would imagine you would want something with a lot of processing power (i5 or so) and a good bit of RAM (8gb) would probably do just fine The graphics card is also important but I'm not familiar with that. There are a lot of people around here who can help I'm sure

it's not that bad actually, it's just a bit older, and will be out of date sooner. My biggest complaint about Alienware is all of the dell computers I have ever owned have an absolutely awful shelf life and end up dying years before any of my other computers.

How serious of a gamer is he? Is he looking for hardcore, great graphics in the ultimate setup? Or is he just looking to be able to play some games?
