| When will video games become a medium that everyone accepts? (Posted on 12/11/12 at 5:28 pm)
When everyone over 40 dies? I'm tired of the negative connotation associated with video games. You can tell someone that you just met that you play and they'll give you a snide look or some shite and it's aggravating. I don't see where the negative association comes from.

Yea and there are tons of people who have hobbies I find silly but I don't judge them on it. Unfortunately the same can't be said about video games. The stereotypes are lame and outdated about games. It's changing though as people have grown up with it more than ever. The NES generation on up is more accepting of it.

Exactly. I just don't get it. It's a medium where you can truly lose yourself and become fully immersed. I don't see the hate. Sure, there are people that look like the stereotypical nerd that play, and maybe that's where it comes from (opinion from association), but the majority of us are normal.

A lot of times people connect being a deadbeat/loser/basement dweller with video games and make lame jokes if they overhear me talking about games. It's a strange occurrence since so many people have played/experienced games these days.

Agree 100%. I got away from games for a while when I started dating my wife and got busy at work but I got back into it around may and am very happy about it. It doesn't control me like people act but it is my hobby.

The next generation will be a lot more accepting of it, there's no way it can hold this negative connotation with them being so popular now. This generation is starting to lean toward accepting it, but you still get the whole nerdy/loser aspect depending on your wording and games being discussed. example, things said in public, followed by public reaction -"Hey man wanna come over and play some NCAA before we go out?" -nothing wrong with that, just guys being guys -"Hey man wanna come over and play some call of duty before we go out?" -kinda nerdy but hey millions of people play call of duty its not that bad -"Hey man wanna come over and play some Skyrim/Borderlands/Mass Effect/(any game that isn't CoD) before we go out?" -omg these guys are nerds who would play that before going out -"Hey man wanna come over and play video games before we go out?" -lol they're not fooling anyone, we know they ain't going out anywhere. I'm surprised they made it outside their parents basement

We pre-game before going out but not that type of pre-game.

It's changing over time. The average age of a gamer is something like 33 or 34. Now, we have people separating games into nerdy vs. non-nerdy. Casual games are acceptable (Halo, Call of Duty, Madden, FIFA, Wii Sports, Wii Fit, Mario, etc.) and then you see more hardcore or niche games immediately deemed as weird. Sad.

It's one of the most casual games out there. Designed that people of multiple skills levels can play and caters to a massive audience of gamers. Not sure how you can spin it as non-casual game. Please note, that I'm not saying it's a bad game or even a bad thing. It has mass appeal and you have a diverse group of people playing it.

probably around the same time i stop mocking people for killing defenseless animals with high powered rifles/shotguns and bragging about it. which will be never we are a cliquish, segmeneted society, which is only enhanced by the internet and the abilility to further delve into our chosen hobby and find like minded people to further reinforce our own stereotypes and worldviews
