No not to a certain extent. If you perpetually are chipping away at the wealth someone has earned they will leave and you and your liberal friends will be left wondering why with your hands still out. You need to get rid of the mentality that the government has claim to anyone's money as it is not what this country was founded on.

Yes, but apparently the majority of the country doesn't, as long as they get some of the evil rich man's money.

Like usual this has turned into a whiny pissing match instead of answering my concern.

Why has the wealth of the middle and lower classes been depleted while corporate profits are soaring and the top 1% continue to accrue a greater % of our nations wealth?

This should be a legitimate concern for everyone, including conservatives.

Because the middle class doesn't know how, nor care to learn how to handle and grow their money. Wealthy people figure it out and are disciplined enough to do it.

A wealth gap is meaningless as long as everyones income is going up.

This is true, but in the case of the United States the statement that everyone's income is increasing is not true. Adjusted for inflation over the past 30 years it is only the top 10% whose income has gone up. Even in that group it is really only the top 1% who have seen significant increases. LINK

If I were to list out the problems the country faces in order of importance, wealth discrepancy would probably not be in the top 50.

I care a lot more about meritocracy than wealth disparity. If hard work and talent are rewarded, then I am OK however the chips land in the income distribution spectrum.

Please give some examples

Public education catapulted our nation to be the most powerful the world has ever seen.

NASA

DARPA = robotics/Internet

Commercial flight took heavy gov't subsidies before prevalence.

Railroad subsidies which propelled our nation into the Industrial Age.

The public investment in the human genome project yielded a 140,000% ROI.

Innovation investments are what propels private industry to help maintain our economic dominance.

These are just a few.

top 50% stays stable, top and bottom % actually go up (one due to govt handouts).
sounds like the middle guy is getting the screw, not the poor. yet people like the OP only want to bemoan to fate of the poor in america.

Is income "adjusted for inflation" expected to go up? Am I missing something here?

Also, the exponential growth of solar power and the reduction of costs. Would have taken 50 years without public support.

Jcole, that is not true. My primary concern is the vanishing middle class.

re: Any conservatives concerned with growing wealth discrepancy?

quote:

Of course I do - but income taxes strike at people actually working, while the wealthy, by and large, are immune from these changes. If the goal is to reduce "wealth disparity", then find a way to institute a wealth tax, and replace the income tax with it.

That way, the better you do, the more you pay, rather than "the harder you work, the more you pay", which seems counter-intuitive to me.

Personally, I don't buy into the class warfare - tax policy should first and foremost, balance federal revenue with sustainable growth in the GDP. All federal spending should be aggressively analyzed and viewed as a necessary evil.

No you don't believe in private property. If you believe that the government is entitled to your wealth, after you have paid your "fair share" of taxes, then you simply don't believe in private property, you believe that the government is entitled to take people's wealth. I bet you love property taxes as well. When do we owe anything these days? Bueller?

I agree that income taxes are probably the worst way to tax people, but taxing wealth is stealing private property. I believe a consumption tax is probably the best way to address these issues.

Politicians gonna politic?

It's all about power. No one has your best interest in mind except yourself.

Also, why direct this at conservatives?

It is if people are arguing that they shouldn't be concerned about a wealth gap because everyone is improving, when in fact only the top 1% really is.
