re: Worst LSU coach in history?

Archer was over his head, but between 1971-2001, LSU only won two SEC titles. One of those was by Mike Archer. Additionally, he was the head coach during a 10-1-1 year in 1987 (we didn't win the SEC that year), arguably the best year LSU had in that 30 year span. Things spiraled out of control, but he brought us to heights we had not achieved since the 60s, and would not achieve again until the Golden era of LSU Football.

He was very defensive about how offensive he was to us.

re: Worst LSU coach in history?

They didn't take Hallman over Spurrier. They took Archer over Spurrier. Spurrier wanted the job back at the end of 1986 when Arnsparger retired but then became the AD at Florida soon after. He was interviewed and then didn't get a 2nd interview at LSU. Arnsparger hand picked Archer and then 3 years after leaving LSU to go to Florida to be the AD he hires Spurrier to be their new coach in 1989.

Spurrier's first season at Florida was in 1990. Hallman's first season at LSU was 1991. This fact is often confused by LSU fans. Another interesting fact about Spurrier is that 2 days before the Capitol One Bowl on New Years 2005 he was interviewing for the LSU job with the LSU administration. He wanted the job then as well but he got passed over in favor of Les Miles. Pretty interesting that Spurrier gets denied twice by LSU in 2 different decades.

My apologies. It was the first thing I thought of when Tepper's name was mentioned. Hannagriff and Ott tried to explain what the hell it was every day (like them or not they were trying). Then we would watch the games and still not understand...just have more questions.

Without a doubt and dont even have to look in the history books for coaches all the way back to the 1800s, clear cut answer is Curley Hudson Hallman. I believe he even was fired from Mussel Shoals, Alabama as Head Coach and AD over there.

Joe Dean hiring on the cheap for a coach that had Brett Farve for a few years of good ball at USM.

Honestly, Dean was probably dazzled by Hallman's resume at USM.

quote:

23-11 in three years at his first HC job. Highest win pct of any coach in school history. Won games on the road against national powers. Led his team to two bowl games. Was a standout college player, and an assistant under three legendary college coaches.

It's easy to look back and say Hallman rode Farve's coattails. But what Dean saw back then was a former star player...Curley intercepted future All-Pro QB Ken Stabler twice in the 1967 Cotton Bowl...who had excelled at a place that was historically dificult to win at.

Perfect example of Hallman being Hallman.

After a typical game under him he said during the post game interview.."I thought we ran the ball pretty well". We had 48 yards rushing that game.

Looks like Curly was linebacker coach at Clemson from 79-80 and DBs in 1981. So he got a national title

First off hallman

Second, you are completely false. Spurrier took his name out of contention. It was nutt and petrino who got the furst interviews. Then it came down to miles and petrino. In hindsight, skip made the best hire at the time.

oh my word.

some of you people's liking of Archer is just strange. He was the pre-dumpster fire before the dumpster fire that was Curley.

Todd Kinchen correctly said of that 1987 team, "the three stooges could have coached that team to 10 wins." It was loaded, thanks to Arnsparger.

Archer was a terrible head coach. There is a reason he never even sniffed a HC job again. He is not HC material. Yes, he was and is a decent DC, but he failed miserably at 2 of the 3 things you need to be a successful head coach.

1. Recruit well (AWFUL!)
2. Surround yourself with good assistants (he got a pass here because the staff stayed mostly in tact from Arnsparger)
3. Be a strong leader, inspire the program (AWFUL!)

He failed at the last because that's just not who he is. He is not a leader. He's a good guy to have on your staff, yes. To run your football program? Horrible.

Archer is the Program Devastator. Curley was just an extension of that.

Heck, at least Curley got some talent in. He left a little something for DiNardo to win with, including 10 games in 1996.

Are you sure about this? I seem to remember being upset at Saban because he waited so long to announce his leaving and Spurrier was already over at South Carolina

Florida 2001
Va.Tech 2002, Auburn 2002, Bama 2002,
Arky 2002, Texas2002

Spurrier had already accepted job at South Carolina because Saban didn't announce his intentions until Christmas day.

They may have talked to Spurrier but he was not gonna skip town on USCe.

Of course, Saban makes his announcement on Christmas day - what a piece of

then why didn't Arnsparger ever win 10 games? I do think Archer was in over his head, but 1986-87 are the two best years LSU had in a 30 year span. Not two best consecutive season, two beat seasons, period. And Archer was the coach for it. He gets SOME credit for that.

quote:

Archer was a terrible head coach. There is a reason he never even sniffed a HC job again. He is not HC material. Yes, he was and is a decent DC, but he failed miserably at 2 of the 3 things you need to be a successful head coach.

And a lot of that was from being promoted too young. It was the Peter Principle in action. Had he gotten the job 10 years later, I think he would have done a far better job. Yes, he deserved to get fired. No, he was not a great coach. But to pretend he had no successes at LSU is completely false. He was the coach for our best two seasons in a 30 year span. He just couldn't sustain a program. He didn't know how to run a major college program and it showed.

Not everything is so damn linear. Archer did have incredible success at first, and ignoring that ignores the full picture of the man. He was completely overwhelmed from being promoted too young. But he did have success early.

He won with Arnsparger's talent? True. But he won more than Arnsparger did, so what does that say about him?

Curly Hallman took an LSU team that was competing for SEC Titles every year and completely destroyed the program. His overall record was 16-28 at LSU. He took over as coach in 1990, only 2 years removed from LSU winning a conference title.

1993 LSU vs. Bama was one of my favorite games. Pigs flew that day
