Yes, I have. I don't know the details of the Michigan walkout, so I don't know what, if anything, they have proposed. And even though I don't agree with some of the proposals they've put forward, there are proposals advanced by teachers to be considered. It might not make the news, but it's happened. It's happened in Chicago regarding improving resources, Louisiana regarding assessment alternatives (incl portfolios and different criteria weighting as an example), it's happened in Canada with regard to student class sizes. And there are countless examples of boards where teachers have accepted salary freezes because of budget restrictions. So it's not always about the money. That's not the same thing as it's never about the money, because obviously it is sometimes. But there are also times when money is involved in the process, that teachers have accepted pay freezes or accepted cuts in pay and benefits for additional security. I've heard lots of proposals put forth by educators and researchers in education during strikes and negotiations. But I'm also not tied to a union nor am I tied to one side of the issue or the other, so I see the merits of arguments for both sides. And it's not always about the money for both sides, either.

I probably cast too wide of a net. Here in La. teacher unions hardly ever put out proposals to improve student education. I am not saying never, but it's close to never. The Michigan teachers are walking out to support their union brethern who oppose the new Michigan right to work laws.

the President says this isn't about economics but about politics Is this a true statement? if so, what politics are being waged here? What does he mean? I am so naive, I just assumed if I went to anyplace of employment I had the right to not join a union...under my civil liberties I just fail to understand Liberal thinking Freedom of choice for Mothers aborting unborn babies (a war on women if you are against abortion), but not for freedom of choice for work without a union? (war on workers) Can libs actually have it both ways? It's a mess!!

Even if it WERE about politics, it's Michigan's politics, and Obama needs to stay out of it and concentrate on federal matters...you know...his job. How are we doing on those fiscal cliff matters Mr. President? It's a joke how people can say with a straight face that this man is a great leader.

Says the man who is out campaigning to voters for his position on the fiscal cliff instead of working with the representatives that the people have already elected to address the matter. What a lying, hypocritical, manipulative POS he is.

So, what exactly is the purpose of a union?
