That pick against Alabama in OT, to me, sort of set the tone for every season we've played since then, always dreading when the next mistake might come, and convinced our QB play couldn't win games for us against good defenses.

You might be on to something here.

Defense was THE problem. Lee was the only reason LSU had any chance against all teams except Tulane

You are an idiot if you really believe the LSU defense caused Lee to thrown more ints than TDs and the most pick6s in LSU history.

A lot of QBs in LSU history have been put in a bad situation, but only one of them threw more ints than TDs and more pick6s in one season than any other SEC QB who ever played.

The LSU defense sucked that year, but Lee made the terrible decisions on when and who to try to get the ball to that resulted in opposing DBs dancing in our endzone like never before or since.

I know that's how I've felt, and also a lot of my friends and family that I discuss LSU football with.

It would make sense that our coaches may have felt the same way and designed gameplans and call plays to limit the opportunity for those QBs to make those mistakes that we all dreaded and felt were right around the corner.

It's fitting IMO that we finally felt that weight lifted against Alabama.

For me, when Mett threw that TD to Jarvis, I felt a sense of confidence I hadn't felt since Lee threw that pick in the endzone in OT in 08.

Losing the game was disappointing obviously, but seeing Mett in command and attacking that D so aggressively and effectively truly closed the book on the GC/JL/JJ era for good in my eyes.

Looking forward to seeing how Mett leads us into the next era starting in 2013.

Okay, this was the year the offense exploded. It started with Bama. What you saw from halftime of the Bama game was a very good offense. It will keep getting better.

I agree, the offense needs to step for us to be a great team next year.

Toss dive on 3rd and 3 into a ten man front. I call this one from my sofa numerous times every time our team plays, and lo and behold, the coach is always reading my mind! In effect, I'm actually the OC. So now you know who is calling the plays.

This year the fans unrealistically expected a QB who had never started a SEC game to be a Heisman contender from day one.

Unrealistic? Johnny Football did it with 2 years less experience.

2008 was on Miles' defensive choice.
Hate to shoot your theory full of holes, but 8 of Lee's 16 Ints were thrown when tied or ahead and 8 thrown when behind.

And no one can even begin to complain about the 2011 offense, until we reverted to JJ

I'm not saying JJ = JFF, but the 3 highest total O performances of 2011 came from the period you just posted....which also included the game with highest passer RAT and a 100% completion rate.

In fact, I doubt there has ever been a stretch of 4 games with 24 point or greater margins of victory in LSU history.
With 3 of those 4 games vs SEC opponents and one being a SECCG, this period has to be one of the more noteworthy "revertings" in SEC history.

I'd like to argue this but when JJ left, his play died along with it in my memory.

Yea, I didn't bring it up, and even ignored the post first time.
Then it got bumped and it's like shaking a brush hog in the face of a bass.

What are you gonna argue anyway? You ain't got nuthin.

For those who are convinced Miles is such a big 10, ground and pound guy who hates creativity, why has he hired Crowton, Gonzales, Stud, and Krag as assistants in his time at LSU???? None of them are from the type of run only mentality that people claim Miles to want. The fact is after two of our most exciting offenses in LSU history under Miles in 06 and 07 we had to shut down the O after the pick six fest in 08 because we had an OC and two quarterbacks that made each other worse and began a cycle of steadily declining performance. Things got a bit better in 2011 with a new perspective from Krag before running into great Ds in Bama and Georgia, which those 2 QBs after their regressions under Crowton simply weren't capable of attacking successfully (especially twice). This year the full O scheme never got a truly fair shot to be showcased due to a WR corps that lacked explosiveness and consistent catching especially early on, and an in-season collapse of the OL due to injury and attrition that would have likely destroyed ANY other teams chances of having ANY success, but somehow our coaches and young players on the OL salvaged it. All this while breaking in a new QB with an ungodly amount of hype almost impossible to live up to, and not much mobility who had to learn how to recognize pressure in the SEC behind a work in progress OL. This could have been a DISASTER, but we won 10 games and threw for more yards down the stretch than we have in years, beginning against Alabama. This O is going to be exceptional next year, the way it was in 06 and 07 when we had an SEC level QB, and anyone who can't see that should bookmark this and we'll revisit this in a year and see who's right.
wow

All I can say is thank goodness for Chavis and his defense. They are the only reason we've done as well as we have. Our offense doesn't even exist--coaches are to blame in every respect. No excuses -- they get paid way too much for this.

Sorry Les,
i agree and like your post, except for the expectation.

les has led lsu thru some of the most extra-ordinary times of any football coach. if EVERYTHING stays perfect, i'm sure we will do ok, but that is not based on the past.

stay in the moment.

Thanks for bumping dude!!

I'll be sure to bump again after 2013 and we'll all see where we are.

Maybe I'll go back and bump all the threads from the bitches in our fan base from 08-09 saying Miles would never beat Saban or Meyer ever again and would never win the SEC again under him.

I would do that, but there would be too many to go through.

2013
