how was this guy even considered for the Heisman?

Passing is so different now.

Gary Beban (UCLA) won the Heisman over OJ in 1967.

87/156 - 1,359 yds, 8 Tds - 8 Ints

OJ - 1415 rushing, 5.3 yds average per and had the "Heisman moment" game winning run to beat #1 UCLA and win the Conference Title and go to the Rose Bowl.

The year before, Beban was a Heisman candidate with 6 Tds and 10 Ints.

No wonder no one passed back then. The QBs for Heisman had just as many picks if not more than TDs. I wonder what kind of stats the "bad" QBs had.

Those stats may not look that impressive on the surface, but 5.5 yards a carry is very when you throw 10 times a game.
.

In 2008 Jon Dwyer had 1395 yards on 200 carries (7.0 ypc) and GT only had 165 pass attempts for the season (only Army, Navy, and Air Force had fewer).

In 2009 he had 1395 yards again, but on 235 carries (5.0 ypc). GT had 168 pass attempts (again only Army, Navy, and AF had fewer)

Jerry Stovall was 2nd in 1960 with only 300+ yards rushing

I'm not gonna look it up but I seem to recall that Archie Griffin was an excellent punt/kickoff returner. Those stats aren't included in the link.

Now I'm beginning to think John Brantley III was just born in the wrong decade... UF could have had another Heisman winner.

I was about to post this. His average was actually 5.9 ypc in 2009. We have never had our top B-Back average below 5 ypc during the Johnson era.
