| Poodles for hunting (Posted on 12/8/12 at 9:08 am)
Many moons ago I went duck hunting with a guide and some friends in eastern NC. The guide showed up with a poodle. We all kind of snickered, but damn, that dog was outstanding. I was wondering if yall have ever hunted with one? Also, I was curious to know if any of yall know any local breeders. As always, thanks OB brethren.

Yea, I hunted with a guide in Eagle Lake, Tx. Years ago, when he showed up with his big poodle we were laughing our arse off. One of the best dogs I've hunted with.

I have seen a few work and come to the same conclusion. If it didn't look like a poodle it would be much more popular. If I am not mistaken they are also good for allergies because the dogs don't shed.

Yea great for people with allergies and someone who doesnt want dog hair all over their house. They do need to be groomed about once a month which can run $40-60 per dog depending on how you get them cut. During the winter months my wife gets them groomed like a show dog . I look pretty ridiculous taking them in the woods

I have been married for a long time - thus I haven't owned a mancard in years.

Exact same response. We laughed and snickered until that dog made one of the longest blind retrieves I have ever seen. The guide never once "handled" the dog. She brought them back. Sat. Put them in hand and then bolted for the rest of them. Windy as hell too. Ducks were blowing everywhere and waves were high. Didn't bother the dog one bit. I get that a lot of that is training, but damn that was a good dog.

What happens if you don't groom them? Dreadlocks? Can you do it yourself?

If you don't get them groomed they will get matted. You can do it yourself if you want. A lot of people use sheep sheers on them. Very similar hair

My red one was $800 because red is rare and she came from a good line. The black one I bought from some trashy people in pride for $200
