I am sorry that he died in that manner...As for being one of the greatest ever?? I don't think so..most of the early stuff written with PM was mindless pop stuff, albeit better than A LOT of mindless pop stuff...the songs of much 'gravitas' were not that many...A LOT of other song writers have written a greater number of good songs...

Well, almost every modern great songwriter will tell you that they were influenced in some way by the songwriting of McCartney and Lennon, so there's that.
And you can hear the influence in tons of great songs from the mid-60's forward. Come on man, Eleanor Rigby? Mindless pop?
I didn't care for much about John Lennon personally. But the guy was a genius in many ways. And he and PM created magic.
Bag love killed Lennon.
