What do DEA and Narcotics officers really think they're doing?

I preface this by saying that I just started watching Breaking Bad.

Regardless, it's strange watching this show, especially when the DEA are working with the drug cartel guys to set up his other drug players. I've heard American drug policy protects drug cartels, but it really didn't fully understand how until I watch this show. Replace drug cartels with corporations and replace US drug policy with regulation and...ta da!

So is it just a matter of self preservation (which I understand), or do these guys really think they're making a difference by driving up the price of stuff they're "taking off the streets," making somebody that much richer?

I assume you meant I instead of 'it'...

Glad it took a fictional tv show to open your eyes to the fraudulent war on drugs.

Oh thank God the sage one showed up.

Oh, I forgot the it. My argument is invalid.

I already held the opinion that it was futile.

Haha, that dumb eh? You put 'it' instead of 'I'. You didn't even rebuttal that properly, wow.

Really? Because it sounds like this tv show had a pretty big influence on your opinion.

No, it just showed a way in which US Drug policy protects the business interest of the people they're warring against.

Oh, because this eloquent mess of a sentence sounds an awful lot like it had a substantial influence on your opinion.

As in "I didn't fully realize just how US drug policy protects the interest of drug cartels." I already held the opinion that the war on drugs was a failed policy.

I can't speak for Narcs, but I know a guy pretty well who was a district attorney for 25 years, and he says we should legalize everything.

It's my stance. Seems prohibition may be worse than legalization. I have friends who were high up in state law enforcement who agree.

Prison guard and police unions are the #1 opponent of common sense drug policy, do the math.

re: What do DEA and Narcotics officers really think they're doing?

I think the real question is where is line drawn. Do we legalize marijuana, Cocaine, Meth, Heroin?

Working in CJ for a very long time, I think that legalization of Marijuana would be fine. Legalizing other drugs that clearly destroy lives is a very different debate.

With the last election where we now have a few states who have legalized it, I think you will see this trend grow significantly over the next decade or so. Eventually the Federal Government will be forced to address the laws and enforcement.

What do we do at the US Mexico border? We literally have thousands of pounds a day of marijuana crossing the border. Do we just let them do it? Do we continue to intervene?

This is a very complex issue.

Another piece of misinformation is the so called Federal War on Drugs. Prosecutions of drug trafficking in Federal Court are way down. They only go after very large cases now. They leave small cases to the State Courts to prosecute.

Pat,

In an odd sort of way, mograyback is right- you don't fully understand everything the big picture (though this isn't your fault). This is mostly because the government doesn't show its cards or reveal 90% of what goes on. Let me say this- the war on drug cartels often ties into foreign policy on levels not seen or understood by the average American. You don't want to see how the sausage is made.

re: What do DEA and Narcotics officers really think they're doing?

i can see why people are apprehensive of coke, meth, herion etc being legalized especially a business man like you russian. but the bottomline is that prohibition isnt working, plain and simple.

if it was legal we could control the process in which these drugs are made, essentially making the product pure and less inherently dangerous. We could also use some of the money used on the WOD to help with treatment. To me this is a much bigger problem

Number one thing I look at though is when we tried this with alcohol, what happened? crime exploded and a very large black market appeared. Same thing has happened with drugs. Many dealers are violent and terrible people. They use the profits from drugs to fund their criminal enterprises. Many of these would be into crime no matter what. BY eliminating the Black market we eliminate much of their funding.

Street level gang activity would take a huge hit as most of these criminals do not have the intelligence to make money any other way.

it is a freedom issue in my book as I could give a shite what others do, so long as it doesnt effect me. but its a much bigger finicial issue for me, in my mind we simply can not afford to continue the WOD.

and Im not a pot head or druggie. I wouldnt use if they were legal.

We had a long discussion on this issue some time ago. You said that you argued with a lot that I had to say and that I was okay for a LEO officer.

I absolutely believe in Liberty.
