| Would you be a draft dodger in a war you didn't believe in? (Posted on 12/7/12 at 5:07 pm)
Assuming a draft was instituted for a war you didn't support and your number was called, would you dodge the draft and refuse to fight or would you report for military service anyway? I guess a better way to frame this would be to ask: do you feel the United States has the legal right to force its citizens to wage war, regardless of an individual's personal beliefs about the conflict?

It depends on the reasoning behind the war. In other words, yes, I would.

Sure. Nothing wrong with escaping forced servitude. ETA: And no, I do not believe that the United States government should/does possess the legitimate authority to draft someone. It is no more just for a government to kidnap someone and force them into slavery than it is for a private individual to do so.

I was potentially faced with this with Vietnam. I was draft age and in the lottery. My number was high enough that I didn't get drafted but I would have gone, even though I didn't agree with the way the war was going.

Given a hypothetical war in which the US was clearly in the wrong, or going to war for the wrong reasons, hell yeah. It's usually not that clear cut, thanks to the art and science of propaganda.

No for the simple reason if my number came up and I didn't go, someone else would have to go in my place.

Hell yeah. When I was a kid, this 80 something year old lady who had lost relatives in WWI, WWII, Korea and Vietnam told me if I were ever drafted to get as far away as possible. Took some time to figure out what she was talking about but if it isn't to protect our immediate border, screw it.,

Yep. I agree if its not on American soil, I won't be there. You're not sending me off to a foreign country to die over politics. frick that. Plus I'm too old to be drafted.

That's exactly what we were facing. Many "conscientious objectors" went to Canada. Where would you go?

Fleeing to Canada to avoid military service does not make you a "conscientious objectors", the majority of "conscientious objectors" accepted induction into the military, and would be placed in non-combat positons the majority of people that avoided service (avoiders, dodgers, deserters) did not do so out of concience.
