As we reported earlier today, Cincinnati’s Butch Jones is the clear front-runner right now in Tennessee's football coaching search.
Jones remains in front despite a late – and very strong — push tonight from some influential UT boosters who believe that Alabama defensive coordinator Kirby Smart is a better choice for the Volunteers because of his ties to the Deep South and his recruiting ability.
At this hour, we can’t confirm that Jones has an offer to be Tennessee’s next head football coach, but he is at the very least —and without question — the leading candidate for the job.
In fact, we think it would be a surprise if Jones isn't named UT’s coach in the next 24 hours.
I bet this is a smokescreen to make the Butch Jones hiring look better to Vol fans. As unhappy as they are about Jones, it pales in comparison to how angry they would feel about Kirby Smart being hired.
