Outboard Repair Question (Posted on 12/6/12 at 11:19 am)
I just got a quote from a repair shop to fix my 2007 Mercury 25HP four Stroke. THe bearing carrier that fits in to the lower unit was cracked at teh point wher it bolts into the lower unit behind the prop. THey said teh gears were fine, there was some rust. Very little because I took the part out before taking it to the shop. I am sure water got in there. They sated that the would have to clean it up replace the part I already mentioned, which is 160.00. Clean teh gears , and "re seal" everything and the cost is 900.00. I am no boat mechanic but I am calling BS. I told them to not do the repairs. I am going to pick up it up. THoughts? Opinions?

I know I cracked the drive shaft on my 300 Merc promax in the sportmaster lower unit. I had to have the drive shaft, carrier bearing, and a few other things replaced and it cost $900 in that big high performace lower unit. So yea, your getting screwed.

Anytime, but a 150 yamaha will be pushing us. I traded the bad boy for a 18ft javelin with a 150 and 15k. Much less stressful now when something breaks
We def need to go though. I will be going back to Cane river a lot over the next 3 months.

Thanks Guys. I am a North Louisiana boy living in Missouri. Shop was in Saint Charles. I went and picked up the boat today. Had to go in twice and ask for ALL the parts they had taken apart. Not even sure I got everything back. I looked at the bearings they were speaking up and a little bearing grease added to them they will be fine. All the gears were fine. Definitely was getting screwed IMO.
